Competing for the first time since September 2022, Canelo Alvarez is eager to fight in front of family and friends on May 6. Canelo faces John Ryder for the undisputed super middleweight titles in Guadalajara.

The fight airs on DAZN PPV in the U.S. and is inside Estadio Akron, which holds approximately 48,000+ people.

For Canelo, the fight is a chance to entertain his fellow countrymen while building momentum for a potential Dmitry Bivol rematch or David Benavidez clash. His grandma will even be at the fight.

"We are so crazy," Alvarez told The AP about the vibe in his home country. "The vibes are just different. It’s amazing. You feel the energy. Everything moves when the people scream. It’s just the best."

A massive underdog, Ryder is ready to prove people wrong. The interim WBO super middleweight champion wants to hold gold for the first time when he enters enemy territory, meaning he's ready to crash Canelo’s homecoming party.

Wherever Canelo fights, money follows. Will that be the same this time out following a few months away from the sport? The Sporting News looks into the purse history of both men and what they can expect to earn following fight night.

Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder fight purse: How much will Canelo Alvarez make?

It is unknown at this moment how much exactly both fighters will make for this fight. However, Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn told The AP that Canelo is taking a pay cut for the fight to be in Mexico.

The rumored amount he will miss out on, compared to if the fight was in Las Vegas, London, or the Middle East, is about $10 million.

“The first round (of offers), it was already much more (than Guadalajara),” Hearn stated. “And then when we went back and said, ‘No,’ it kept going up. And I kept going back, and in the end, (Alvarez) told me to stop. ‘Stop. Shut up. We’re doing it.’”

According to Sports Payouts, Canelo will earn guaranteed $15m for the fight and further his earnings to $40m if pay-per-views sales go to plan.

It will be Canelo’s first fight in Mexico since 2011. Turning pro in 2005, Canelo has a 33-0-1 record in Mexico.

“Sometimes it’s not about money,” Álvarez told The AP. “Sometimes it’s about pride, and it’s that time. I don’t need to say how much I lose, because I don’t care. I feel good to fight in my hometown, and I’m proud.”
