One of the greatest fighters to ever come out of Mexico, Canelo Alvarez is ready to test himself before a home audience for the first time in over a decade. Undergoing surgery in late 2022, Canelo returns to action to face John Ryder on May 6 at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara.

The fight for Canelo’s undisputed super middleweight title airs on DAZN PPV in the United States.

Canelo, who has a 33-0-1 record in Mexico, last fought in his home country in 2011, beating Kermit Cintron via TKO. Since then, he has gone 19-2-1, winning middleweight, super middleweight, and light heavyweight gold. In less than eleven months, he became the undisputed super middleweight champion. An attempt to wrench the WBA light heavyweight title from Dmitry Bivol ended in a unanimous decision defeat.

After recovering from injuries following his win over Gennadiy Golovkin in their third fight last September, Canelo is ready to continue his dominant run.

“I feel very good. I have a lot of years in my career; 17 years as a pro,” Canelo said at the pre-fight press conference. “I’ve had injuries too. I’m not at my best, but I’m very motivated, and I’m very happy to be in the gym to train at 100%, and they’re going to see what is coming. I’m very excited and motivated. Be careful with that.”

Ryder turned pro in 2010 and won the interim WBA super middleweight title against Bilal Akkawy in May 2019. Later that year, Callum Smith won a controversial decision over him to retain WBA and Ring Magazine belts. Since then, Ryder has won four in a row, including victories over Daniel Jacobs and Zach Parker. He beat Parker for the interim WBO super middleweight title.

The +700 underdog (to Canelo, the -1200 favorite, per Bet MGM), Ryder is looking to spoil Canelo’s homecoming.

“I’m not here for a holiday, and I wouldn’t bring the team with me, have the team around me that I have if I didn’t believe I could win,” Ryder said. “I’m going, leaving no stone unturned, putting everything in this camp, and truly believe I can come away victorious on May 6.”
