England will be looking to regain The Ashes for the first time since 2015, with a blockbuster five-game Test series against Australia set to kick off on June 16th.

With the sport's most famous trophy on the line, both sides are primed for huge performances and the newly-crowned World Test Championship winners will be taking on the vocal UK crowd.

After taking out the 2017/18 series on home soil, Australia would retain the urn overseas in 2019, before again proving far too strong for England in the 2021/22 campaign Down Under.

With so much to play for, The Sporting News have cast our eye over both teams' chances in the Test series below.

The Ashes 2023 predictions and expert tips

Australia will go into the series as favourites following their WTC Final victory over India, but this is going to be an evenly-matched affair between two quality sides.

While the visitors will be bringing in some strong form and the No.1 ICC Test ranking, playing in English conditions has proved tricky in the past - especially for someone like David Warner, who struggled in the 2019 Ashes.

Australia's last Test series win in England came 22 years ago and they will undoubtedly have an uphill battle ahead of them to once again retain the urn. Last time they travelled to the UK, the Aussies drew the series 2-2.

The recent form of Travis Head, who blasted a brilliant century at The Oval against India, could be the biggest concern for the hosts, while the pace attack of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland and Josh Hazlewood is always a threat against any side.

For the hosts, Harry Brook has become one of the most exciting players in Test cricket, while the renewed confidence across the board under head coach Brendon McCullum and the 'Bazball' mentality will certainly change the way Australia perform from a tactical perspective.

Stuart Broad made light work of Warner four years ago and that individual battle will be a major talking point. However, the absence of tearaway quick Jofra Archer leaves a massive hole in the England lineup - especially after the havoc he caused last time they met in the UK.

Australia are the favourites for a reason with the pure class in both their batting and bowling stocks, but England are never an easy task on home soil.

Given the recent performance in London, their impressive 2019 campaign, Steve Smith's exploits in the UK and the current form of the aforementioned Head and Boland, we're going to give the visitors a slight edge in The Ashes.
