Scott Edwards will come up against his home country on Wednesday night, with the Netherlands captain set to face off against Australia for the first time in the ODI World Cup.

The 27-year-old, who was born in Tonga but raised in Melbourne, has represented the Dutch side on over 90 occasions after qualifying for selection due to his grandmother.

Edwards is a wicket-keeper batsman and became the Netherlands' seventh one-day skipper in recent years, while also previously representing the nation in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

He has followed in the footsteps of Dirk Nannes and Tom Cooper as Aussie stars to feature in the orange kit on the international stage.

Who is Scott Edwards?

Born in Tonga in 1996 to Australian parents, Edwards was raised in Victoria and attended Emmanus College.

After coming through the junior ranks with Blackburn South Cricket Club, the keeper went from working as an electrician to playing for the Netherlands after earning dual citizenship through his grandparents.

"It was pretty surreal to be honest, was going about life as an apprentice and then all of a sudden you're playing international cricket coming up against Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis... it was pretty exciting," he told Herald Sun

Edwards has since represented the Netherlands on 93 occasions across ODI and T20 cricket, amassing close to 2000 runs and 14 half-centuries during his six-year international career.

While representing his Dutch heritage and relocating overseas, Edwards still spends his summers in Australia playing grade cricket for Richmond, while also studying a Bachelor of Business at Deakin University.
