Manchester City secured a historic treble in 2022/23 with their crowning moment coming on June 10 as they won their first ever Champions League trophy.

A 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Turkey saw Pep Guardiola's side add to their Premier League and FA Cup trophies.

Winning a treble, whether domestic or European, is a rare achievement when it comes to English clubs.

The Sporting News takes a look at previous English clubs to have managed the same feat.

How many English clubs have won the treble?

Manchester United are the only other English side to win the treble. During the 1998/99 season, Sir Alex Ferguson led the Red Devils to the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup titles.

That incredible achievement with the European trophy has now only been matched by rivals Manchester City's latest triumph. Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Bayern Munich (twice), Barcelona (twice) and Inter Milan are the continental teams to have done so. Also, Celtic went went one further in 1966/67 by doing the quadruple.

However, City did win a domestic treble in the 2018/19 season under Guardiola. Also, Liverpool tasted the glory of a cup treble in 2000/01, albeit with the UEFA Cup rather than Champions League.

Eight clubs have won the double in England, including the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, but they were not been able to secure a third trophy in those campaigns.

How did Man United win the treble?

The treble achieved by the Old Trafford giants is often described as Sir Alex's best achievement as manager, and they did so in dramatic fashion.

They secured the Premier League title on the final day of the season, beating Arsenal to the trophy by one point. Andy Cole scored the winner against Tottenham in his debut season for the club.

Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes secured a 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the FA Cup final, four days before the Champions League final.

The Red Devils faced Bayern Munich and looked to be heading for defeat before a late miracle. Down 1-0 heading into injury time, Sheringham equalised in the 91st minute before super-sub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored a 93rd-minute winner.

How did Man City win the domestic treble?

Like their local rivals, Man City won the league on the final day as they finished one point ahead of Liverpool. They beat Brighton 4-1 to secure back-to-back Premier League titles.

Guardiola then led his side to a penalty shootout victory over Chelsea in the EFL Cup final, before ending the season in style with a 6-0 win over Watford in the FA Cup.
