Wyndham Championship 2023 betting guide: Our in-house PGA pro predicts the champ and picks his top props

Fifteen years ago, nobody cared about the Wyndham Championship. Lost between the PGA Championship and the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs, only the bottom of the top 125 came to Greensboro. It was compelling to watch guys compete for their career and TOUR card, but the reality is without a major sponsor and headliners the event was on life support. Along came Wyndham, and a return to Sedgefield Country Club.

The classic Donald Ross design measuring 7,131 yards and par of 70 always tested the PGA TOUR’s talent. Still, this Bermudagrass birdiefest really lacked the field it needed to get noticed. Shootouts are entertaining, but after three years with Carl Petterson, Ryan Moore, and Arjun Atwal winning the Nielson, the numbers just didn’t add up. The event carried on, and even when the 125 drama came down to the final nine holes, Wyndham still lacked serious luster. Then along came LIV Golf…

In reaction to the upstart tour, the PGA TOUR made some serious changes. Some of us noticed specific differences right away. Purse money increased and elevated events brought the best players together more often. Other modifications have taken longer to grab our attention.

Only the top 70 will make the FedEx Cup playoffs this year. The previous player total was 125 for the last decade plus. In doing this, popular players having an average season are facing relegation. When would we have ever seen a Justin Thomas or Adam Scott grinding over their TOUR card? This week at the Wyndham we will.

Before we get into the Wyndham odds, let's take a look at how our best bets from last week's 3M Open fared:

3M Open: Scorecard

Outright: Cameron Young outright winner (+1600) ❌
H2H: Patrick Rodgers over Sahith Theegala (-114) ✅

Wyndham Championship: Setting the scoring stage

The average winning score over the past 10 years at Sedgefield Country Club is 19 under par. The tree-lined layout carved out of the Carolina pines promotes a patient game plan. Players are forced to pick specific landing areas off the tee. Much like Harbourtown, Colonial, and Waialae there is a very predictive skill set that determines our contenders. The majority of approach shots fall in the 125-175 yard zone. The best wedge players in this 156 man field will create the most birdie opportunities.

The true test at Sedgefield comes on the greens. Winners have really distanced themselves from the other Sunday contenders with the flat-stick. Players three-putt well above the PGA TOUR average at Wyndham. With nine par-4s under 450 yards, one cannot afford to give back strokes in this birdiefest.

Securing those specific landing spots in the fairway is important. Accuracy is favored over length as Sedgefield annually falls in the top 10 for difficult scoring from outside the fairway. Bermudagrass rough is gnarly — and worst of all, it creates questions. Players love predictive lies. Get in that 2.5-inch rough and you never know how that ball will come out. Start missing greens and you can't keep up. Since 2015, Sedgefield has been the easiest strokes gained approach course on the PGA TOUR.

Only six holes average over par. A dozen holes have a birdie rate over 15 percent. You can see where all this is going. The pressure to score at Wyndham is only magnified, even more by the season-ending moment. One year ago, Tom Kim closed with a 61 on Sunday to take the title at 20 under par. Unlike last week, we need to favor the flat-stick largely over ball striking. The best at Wyndham always get hot with the putter. Put your money behind these Wyndham winners.

Wyndham Championship 2023: Time to deliver

Best bet to win: JT Poston (+3000 on BetMGM)

Entering the 2019 Wyndham Championship, JT Poston had missed five cuts in his last eight starts. He won the tournament that year. Going into the 2023 Wyndham Championship, Poston has three top 10s in his last five starts and a runner-up finish last week at the 3M Open. Known for his putting, JT has been positive with his game T2G. He is ranked top 20 in the field for approaches from 125-175 yards. In total, he is gaining over six and half shots against the field in his last five starts. That combination of approach and putting makes him a legit threat to win, especially on a course where he has done it already.

Wyndham Championship 2023: Top 40 play

Best bet to finish in the Top 40: Chesson Hadley (+150 bet365)

Chesson Hadley has a pair of top 15 finishes in the last two years at Wyndham. The match of his approach game and putter really fit. Sixth place at the Barracuda and twenty-seventh at the 3M his iron game and putter are ready for Wyndham once again.

Wyndham Championship 2023: Best Bet of the Week!

Take Alex Smalley H2H over Justin Thomas (-110 BetMGM)

Justin Thomas missed the cut in five of his last seven starts. Wyndham requires great putting and JT’s flatstick has gained positive strokes once in his last eight tournaments. Alex Smalley is ranked third for proximity to the hole and has two top 10s in his last four starts. The Duke alumni sits forty-seventh on the FEC points list and well inside the playoff top 70.
