Who is expected to play?

As with most poker tournaments, it’s generally hard to nail down exactly who is going to show up and battle on the felt. For the upcoming Poker Masters, we do have a decent idea of who might show up.

First is Daniel Negreanu, who has been vocal on the DAT Poker Podcast and social media that he will be playing Poker Masters. Next we have 2022 PokerGO Cup champion Jeremy Ausmus, who has posted some action on a notable staking platform. Along with Ausmus, Cary Katz, Josh Arieh, Alex Livingston, and Dan Colpoys have Poker Masters action posted online.

Then we can take a look at the PGT leaderboard, as many of those taking up the top 30-40 spots are likely to be in on the Poker Masters action. Stephen Chidwick is the current PGT leaderboard frontrunner, and then PGT regulars such as Jason Koon, Alex Foxen, and Sean Winter are sitting in the top 10.

Names like Nick Petrangelo, David Peters, Sam Soverel, Brock Wilson, Chino Rheem, Erik Seidel, and Shannon Shorr are all within the top 50 of the PGT leaderboard but currently outside the top 21. With the top 21 players on the PGT leaderboard qualifying to compete in the season-ending PGT Championship for a chance to take home a $500,000 winner-take-all prize, these are names we predict will be in the mix in hopes of bettering their standing.

History of the Poker Masters

The 2022 Poker Masters marks the seventh edition of the high-stakes tournament series. There have been five live versions of the Poker Masters and two online versions.

The first Poker Masters took place in 2017 and featured five tournaments. Germany’s Steffen Sontheimer won two of the five events on his way to winning the first-ever Purple Jacket. In 2018, Ali Imsirovic won two of the series’ seven events to earn himself a Purple Jacket. Then in 2019, it was Sam Soverel winning two events of his own to grab the Purple Jacket.

The two online versions of the Poker Masters took place in 2020 when live poker paused due to the coronavirus pandemic. Alexandros Kolonias won the 2020 Poker Masters Online and Eelis Parssinen won the 2020 Poker Masters Online PLO Series.

In 2021, Australian poker sensation Michael Addamo won the Poker Masters Purple Jacket before going on to win Super High Roller Bowl VI for $3,402,000.

Super High Roller Bowl immediately follows Poker Masters

Speaking of Super High Roller Bowl, the next edition of the famed event is set to take place a day after Poker Masters concludes. Poker Masters wraps up on Monday, October 3, with the final table of Event #12: $50,000 No-Limit Hold’em, then the $300,000 buy-in Super High Roller Bowl VII kicks off on Wednesday, October 5.

Super High Roller Bowl VII is scheduled as a three-day tournament, with all three days live streamed on PokerGO.

Date Event Buy-in
Wed 10/5 Super High Roller Bowl VII Day 1 $300,000
Thur 10/6 Super High Roller Bowl VII Day 2 $300,000
Fri 10/7 Super High Roller Bowl VII Day 3 $300,000

All Poker Masters tournaments and Super High Roller Bowl VII qualify for PGT leaderboard points. The top 21 players as ranked by the PGT leaderboard will be eligible to compete in the season-ending PGT Championship for a chance to take home the $500,000 winner-take-all prize.
