Sevilla won another UEFA Europa League after downing AS Roma in the 2023 final via penalty kicks.

Although Sevilla struggled domestically in 2022/23, their run in the Europa League gave their fans some much-needed joy after the first half of the season saw them in the relegation zone for a few weeks as well as being knocked out of their Champions League group.

Despite all that, Sevilla under their third manager of the season (Jose Luis Mendilibar) made the final of the Europa League again and won it. Their ability to go deep into this tournament, and win the trophy, is unmatched.

The Sporting News looks at Sevilla's history in the European tournament.

How many times have Sevilla won the Europa League?

Sevilla first entered the Europa League in the 1982/83 season, when the competition was called the UEFA Cup. Since then they have participated in 17 editions of the competition and have become the most successful club to have taken part.

Sevilla have won seven Europa League titles in their history, four more than any other side to play in the tournament. All their wins have come in the last two decades, lifting the trophy for the first time in 2006.

Between 2014 and 2016, Sevilla became the first team to win the competition in three consecutive seasons. Prior to 2023, their previous title in the Europa League came in the 2019/20 season, when they beat another Italian team, Inter Milan, 3-2 behind closed doors in Germany.

Have Sevilla ever won the Champions League?

The additional reward of winning the Europa League is automatic qualification to the Champions League. But despite their dominance on Thursday nights, Sevilla have struggled when competing against stronger sides in UEFA's elite competition.

The furthest stage they have managed to reach in the Champions League is the quarterfinals, making the last eight on two occasions in 10 attempts.

Sevilla managers in the Europa League

The manager who first brought European success to Sevilla was Juande Ramos. He won back-to-back Europa League trophies for the club in the mid-2000s and beat Barcelona 3-0 in the 2006 UEFA Super Cup. He went on to manage Tottenham and Real Madrid after his time in Seville, winning a League Cup with the English side.

Beating Ramos' European record would've been a difficult task, but Unai Emery managed to eclipse him during his time at the club between 2013 and 2016. He led his side to three consecutive titles in the competition, beating Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in the third final. Emery decided to move on to a bigger challenge after 2016.

Julen Lopetegui secured Sevilla's sixth Europa League title in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was his first-ever win as a club manager, previously leading Spain's youth sides to two European Championship titles.

Jose Luis Mendilibar scripted the most unlikely of the triumphs with the club in the relegation zone for the first part of the season. The club fired two coaches before hiring Mendilibar in March 2023. Two months later the club was in mid-table in La Liga and hoisting the Europa League.

Europa League prize money for winners

The Europa League can be a good source of money for sides who are making their European debuts but is also very useful for teams who win the competition as often as Sevilla.

Based on figures from the 2021/22 season, qualifying for the group stage brings in £3.17 million while each win in the early phase is an additional £549,290. The most you can earn in a single Europa League season is £19.976 million, if you won every game, and winning the final itself is worth over £8 million.

The winning team also receives a further £13.6 million as they automatically qualify for the Champions League group stages in the following season.
