Former Test captain Michael Clarke has unloaded on Australian selectors, questioning their costly decisions during the 2-1 series loss to India.

After being completely blown off the park in the first two matches, the visitors managed to fight back and win the third Test before drawing the fourth, leaving the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the hands of India.

Travis Head was controversially left out of the side for the series opener, before shining at the top of the order later in the series including a 90 in Ahmedabad.

Unfortunately for the Aussies, the decision to recall Head to the side was too little too late and Clarke was more than ready to remind George Bailey and company of their mistakes.

“Has somebody come out and said, ‘We got it wrong’ yet? Everyone came out at the time and said, ‘We made the right decision," he said on Big Sports Breakfast

"Is it still the right decision to have not picked Travis Head in the first Test match?

“Being a selector is a tough gig, don’t get me wrong, but we have to admit we got it wrong in not picking Steve Smith in our Twenty20 World Cup campaign, 100 per cent we got that wrong and 100 per cent we got it wrong not picking Travis Head in the first Test match.

"It's no coincidence we lost both. We lost the T20 World Cup, underperformed, and we had every opportunity when you look at this Test series gone by, no matter how tough the wicket has been. We could’ve won the series. That’s how close it should’ve been.

“Can you imagine Travis Head, a senior player, he’s captained South Australia, his record in the last 12 months outstanding, No.4 ranked Test batter in the world - imagine the shock he would have got being told he’s not being picked and he’s around the group as well.

“Even the best players in spin, it’s different. It’s a different place to play spin bowling. It takes time to adjust and work out that inconsistent bounce, to work out which shots are appropriate, that variation takes time, you’ve got to give guys an opportunity.

“Even if they started with Travis Head, gave him a couple of Tests and he didn’t perform, the selectors could justify that.

"But to not pick him in the first Test, it’s exactly what England did with Anderson and Broad when they came to Australia, they just tried to get too funky. Give your best players the first chance.

“Everybody would have been going, ‘What has just happened here'...we shot ourselves in the foot.”

Head's performances at the top of the order have also created an interesting dilemma for Australia later this year, with a massive Ashes series against England set for June and July.

Veteran opener David Warner will be back in the frame after recovering from an elbow injury, leaving Clarke questioning his place in the side.

“You look silly now,” he said.

"All of us past players and fans go, ‘Okay, it seems like even if I disagree with the selection or non-selection of Travis Head, I respect they are saying horses for courses’. Okay, you’re going to go with that, cool.

“The first Test in England, how do they pick David Warner? How do they justify that if they do pick Dave Warner now?

“If he doesn’t perform, then you can drop him."
