Canada and Uruguay square off in North Carolina on Saturday in the battle for third place in this year's Copa America.

Making their first-ever Copa America appearance, Canada exceeded expectations by reaching the semifinal, where they suffered a 2-0 loss to the holders Argentina.

Jesse Marsch's troops can take pride in their performance against the World Cup winner. But while the Canucks went toe-to-toe with Messi and Co., the game also highlighted the gap that still exists between CONCACAF nations and the very best in the world and there's still plenty of work to be done before Canada can truly compete at this stage.

They take on Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay, who looked destined to make the final after taking down Brazil on penalties in the quarterfinal. However, they suffered their first loss in this edition of the Copa America, going down 1-0 against a 10-man Colombia.

A resurgent James Rodriguez set up Jefferson Lerma for the game's only goal in the first-half stoppage time as the Celeste were unable to find the equalizer despite playing with a man advantage for the entirety of the second half.

Canada vs. Uruguay predicted lineups, starting 11, team news

CanMNT boss Jesse Marsch confirmed star man Alphonso Davies's x-rays were "negative" after he suffered a foot injury in Tuesday's semifinal defeat to Argentina, but it remains unclear if he would be able to feature in Saturday's game.

Otherwise Marsch should have a full squad available, with only Tajon Buchanan set to miss Saturday's clash. The Inter Milan star broke his tibia while training for the quarterfinal clash against Venezuela and subsequently missed the semifinal clash against Argentina. He underwent a successful surgery in the following days and while he eventually joined his teammates, he won't be available at Marsch’s disposal.

Toronto FC's Richie Laryea replaced him against Argentina and will likely keep his place at right wing, with Cyle Larin, Jacob Shaffelburg and Jonathan David rounding out the attack.

Canada starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left):  Crepeau (GK) — Johnston, Bombito, Cornelius, Davies — Kone, Eustaquio — Laryea, David, Shaffelburg — Larin.

Injured: Buchanan.

Suspended: None.

A major talking point following the brawl after Uruguay's semifinal defeat to Colombia will see CONMEBOL review whether any players could be punished, and subsequently banned, for this match with Darwin Nunez likely most at risk.

Uruguay will get a defensive boost for Saturday's third-place playoff game with Nahitan Nandez returning from suspension after he was made to take the walk of shame for a horrendous studs-up tackle on Rodrygo in the penalty shoot-out victory over Brazil in the Copa America quarter-finals.

Fellow defender and key Barcelona star Ronald Araujo lasted just 33 minutes in the same game before succumbing to a serious-looking leg injury, which ruled him out for the rest of the tournament and for up to eight weeks; a devastating blow for both club and country.

Araujo's crushing absence opened the door for Atletico Madrid stalwart Jose Gimenez to return to the Celeste defence alongside Sebastián Cáceres and Mathías Olivera as head coach Marcelo Bielsa switched to a back-three system.

It remains to be seen if the former Leeds United boss persists with the dynamic 3-2-4-1 formation after the disappointing result last time out, but he's likely to wield the axe and hand minutes to various fringe stars who have seen little action over the course of the tournament.

Flamengo duo Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Guillermo Varela, Los Angeles FC winger Cristian Olivera and promising Club America attacker Brian Rodríguez are all in line to see prominent action in this third-place play-off game.

Uruguay starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left):  Rochet (GK) — Varela, Gimenez, Olivera, Vina — Valverde, Ugarte — Pellistri, De Arrascaete, C. Olivera— Nunez.

Injured: Araujo.

Suspended: None.
