UFC 302 is the first of five straight weekends of Octagon-based action, culminating Saturday night with a lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier.

The fight marks Poirier's third attempt at winning a UFC lightweight title despite winning the interim belt at UFC 236 in April 2019. Poirier has beaten a who's-who list of some of the most well-known names the sport has to offer, including Conor McGregor (2x), Dan Hooker, Max Holloway, Benoit Saint-Denis and others.

Despite Makhachev's presence as a heavy favorite, colossal upsets in UFC history have occurred. Matt Serra vs. Georges St.-Pierre 1, Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva 1, and Holly Holm's 2015 KO against Ronda Rousey all come to mind as some of the sport's most memorable. To add to that, not to mention Michael Bisping's heroic efforts against then-champion Luke Rockhold at UFC 199, as he took the fight on under two weeks' notice and became the first-ever British-born UFC champion at the time.

Nevertheless, if Poirier were to win Saturday night in New Jersey, he would become the first fighter in promotional history to win a belt on his third attempt. The previous four – Urijah Faber, Colby Covington, Alexander Gustafsson, and Chael Sonnen – are a combined 0-12 all-time in these situations, having never won a lineal UFC title.

Makhachev vs. Poirier isn't the only five-round fight fans can look forward to.

The co-main event features contrasting styles in a key middleweight fight. Sean Strickland, fresh off a five-round decision loss to Dricus Du Plessis in January, will fight Paulo Costa out of Brazil. The winner likely remains in the mix for a middleweight title fight, as the UFC has not confirmed Du Plessis' first title defense.

The 12-fight card features other fan favorites, including Kevin Holland, Jake Matthews, and Cesar Almeida.
