The League of Legends hit animated series Arcane is returning to Netflix for a second season this year.
Fans, however, may be disappointed to learn the second season will be the show's last.
Arcane features two cities, Piltover and Zaun, clashing with multiple in-game champions included as characters in the show. Jinx and Vi's sister rivalry is the driving conflict.
The show's X account posted the Season 2 trailer, teasing the final chapter between the two aforementioned cities and sisters. The production team released a subsequent video explaining the reason behind the show's early ending.

Arcane Season 2 trailer
When Arcane debuted in November 2021, fans were eager for the show's second season. It didn't initially have a release date in mind because Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent didn't know how well Season 1 would perform.
"The bad reason is honestly, like, we didn't know if Season 1 was gonna be a success," Laurent told League of Legends Pro League caster Guan Ze Yuan. "If I had known we could have started Season 2 way earlier, but we didn't know so we kind of waited a bit, and so now we're paying the price, so it's unfortunately not going to be this year."
Now, we have a much better idea of when Season 2 will hit Netflix later this year. Here's the trailer:

The trailer features many of the show's characters including Caitlin, Ekko, Jinx, and Vi. The two sisters are seen in what looks like a final battle scene toward the end of the trailer. That's likely the climax considering the show's plot.

Arcane Season 2 release date
Arcane Season 2 will be released on Netflix in November 2024. There isn't a specific date just yet, but Season 1's rollout began on Nov. 6, 2021.
It's uncertain whether the producers will follow the same rollout as Season 1, which featured three episodes hitting Netflix each week for a total of three weeks. That's nine total episodes.
Season 2's episode count is unknown right now.

Is this Arcane's last season?
Season 2 will mark the end of Arcane, as announced on X with its teaser trailer.
It's relatively shocking news from a fan's perspective considering how well Season 1 performed, but this was the creators' plan from the beginning.
Christian Linke, a co-creator of Arcane, explained the reasoning in a video posted below the show's trailer on X.
"From the very beginning since we started working on this project, we had a very specific ending in mind," Linke said. "Which means the story of Arcane wraps up with the second season. Arcane is just the beginning of our larger storytelling journey and our partnership with the wonderful animation studio in Paris called Fortiche."

Linke is proud of how far much Jinx and Vi's lore has grown from the moment they were added as in-game champions to main characters on Arcane. He wants to give more champions the same treatment, thus announcing that the team is working on its "next projects across television and film."
"We're still really early in the stages of that process, and these things do take a lot of time," Linke said, hoping he can share more by the end of 2024.
