Fantasy Football QB Draft Strategy: Will Cowboys' Dak Prescott or Packers' Jordan Love be the better pick?

Rushing quarterbacks are all the rage in fantasy football, and it comes with good reason. The rushing production of players like Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts unlocks another level of fantasy production that is not reachable by the vast majority of pocket passers.

But pocket passers still have their place in fantasy football. Very few quarterbacks are able to marry their arm talent and rushing ability, meaning there are just a handful of elite dual-threat options to choose from in fantasy drafts. As a result, about half of your league will leave your draft with a quarterback whose production is driven almost exclusively by what they can do through the air.

Two of the pocket passers who will be drafted as fantasy starters in most leagues are Dak Prescott and Jordan Love. Neither typically does a whole lot with their legs, but they lead elite offenses that are expected to be among the league's best in 2024.

Current ADP sees these two quarterbacks separated by just four picks. If you're on the clock in Round 7 and are looking to draft a quarterback, should you go with Love or Prescott?

Jordan Love vs. Dak Prescott: Which quarterback should you draft in fantasy football?

Jordan Love's fantasy football outlook for 2024

It was an up-and-down year for Jordan Love in his first season as the Packers' full-time starter. He came out of the gates on fire, clearing 20 fantasy points in each of his first three games. He tacked on a 19.6-point performance in Week 4 to round out a very strong first month. He then cooled off for the next five weeks, failing to hit 20 points in any of those matchups. But what has drafters really excited for year two of the Love era in Green Bay is how he closed out the season.

The Packers went on a tear to end the 2023 season. From Week 11 on, Love was the QB2, leading the Packers to a 6-2 record during this stretch. He averaged 21.2 PPG in these eight games and showed a true connection with his receivers in the process.

Looking forward to the 2024 season, Love will once again have an opportunity to capitalize on the fact that the Packers' offense features four starting-caliber receivers. Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks all feature unique skill sets and will be at the disposal of Love. He made the most of their talent last year, throwing for 4,159 yards, and should capitalize once again in 2024. He also has two solid tight ends in Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft, and Josh Jacobs is more than capable of catching passes out of the backfield.

It was just the preseason, but we saw what this offense is capable of when Love and Wicks connected for a 65-yard touchdown strike on the third play of their preseason opener. It appears that Love and his receivers haven't lost a step this offseason and will pick up right where they left off.

Dak Prescott's fantasy football outlook for 2024

It was a tale of two halves for Dak Prescott in 2023. Prescott was the QB21 through five weeks and was actually dropped in many leagues. He did a complete 180 after Dallas' Week 7 bye and finished the year as the QB3. After that fateful bye week, Prescott averaged 24.0 PPG and was the QB1 over the final 11 games of the year.

But how did Prescott overcome his early season woes? It's actually pretty straightforward; the Cowboys threw the ball at a ridiculous rate down the stretch. After throwing the ball just 24 times in both Week 1 and Week 5, Prescott did not throw the ball fewer than 31 times following the bye week. Prescott also led the league in total dropbacks in the 11 games following the bye week. They almost completely abandoned the run and relied on Prescott's connection with CeeDee Lamb to win games.

There's no indication that things are going to change in Dallas this year. The front office completely neglected the running back room, replacing Tony Pollard with Ezekiel Elliott in free agency. This offense will once again be centered around the Prescott-Lamb connection, while mixing in some looks to Jake Ferguson, who cemented himself as a reliable option at TE last year and could have a true breakout season in 2024. Regardless of who's seeing the targets, this offense will likely pass at one of the highest rates in the league.

The offensive weaponry behind Lamb is a bit concerning outside of Ferguson, but it is largely the same group of skill players as last year. This was an offense that led the league in scoring last year, and they will certainly contend for the No. 1 spot once again. If the Cowboys' offense scores at a high level in 2024, it will be in large part thanks to the success of Prescott.

The Verdict: Should you draft Dak Prescott or Jordan Love?

Both are quality options and each has a fair case to be drafted ahead of the other. Some may gravitate towards Love because he is the fresh face who may not have reached his true ceiling. But Prescott is the clear choice here.

Prescott will be slinging the ball all over the field in an offense that features one of the most dangerous weapons in the NFL. The Packers will do their fair share of throwing, but they did just sign a workhorse back in Josh Jacobs who has shown the ability to handle 400 touches, something Aaron Jones was never able to do.

Prescott and Lamb showed that they were able to shoulder the offensive responsibility and dominate defenses in the process. This was the most lethal QB-WR duo in fantasy football down the stretch last year. It wouldn't be a shock to look back in six months and see they are dominating once again and Prescott is a top-5 fantasy option.
