Penn State vs. West Virginia weather updates: Thunderstorms cause halftime delay in Morgantown

Penn State is entering the 2024 college football season with high expectations. The offense, centered around QB Drew Allar, is ranked No. 8 in the country as Week 1 gets underway.

Everything was clicking Saturday for the Nittany Lions. In their season opener against West Virginia in Morgantown, Allar helped lead Penn State to a 20-6 halftime lead. The quarterback found the end zone three times through the first 30 minutes, including two touchdowns to wide receiver Harrison Wallace III. 

That momentum has since been stopped dead in its tracks — but not for anything happening on the gridiron. Penn State and West Virginia are stuck in a weather delay as thunderstorms rolled in during the halftime intermission.

Penn State vs. West Virginia weather updates

Thunderstorms with potential lightning in Morgantown have caused a delay to the Penn State vs. West Virginia football game. 

The game finished the first half at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium with the Nittany Lions holding a 20-6 lead. But the two teams have not yet resumed to finish the second half due to a lightning strike in the area during halftime. 

The stadium has since been evacuated, with fans in attendance seeking shelter under the stands.

Penn State vs. West Virginia is set to resume with the second half kickoff at 4:30 p.m. ET. 

West Virginia forecast

A severe thunderstorm warning has been put into place for the Morgantown, W.V. area, according to Weather.com

Thunderstorms are expected to continue in the area until 5 p.m. ET, with the potential to carry into the evening The storms are bringing heavy rains with it, with lightning anticipated as well.

The winds aren't estimated to be as big of a factor, with the forecast calling for gusts to hit 5 mph.
