Arsenal’s new midfielder Mikel Merino is set for a spell on the sidelines following an unfortunate injury.

The Spain international, who joined the Gunners from Real Sociedad, suffered a shoulder fracture during his first training session with the club.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, revealed that Merino sustained the injury in a collision with teammate Gabriel.

“It is unfortunate. Yesterday he had a collision and got a shoulder injury,” Arteta said. “It looks as though he could be out for a few weeks. It was his first session.”

Merino’s injury impact and recovery timeline

The injury occurred when Merino landed awkwardly, with Gabriel falling on top of him. Arteta mentioned that the injury could be a small fracture, and the club is waiting for further tests to determine the exact recovery time.

“It was looking very good, and we were all excited,” Arteta added. “He was in so much pain, and we have to wait and see and do more tests. This is football.”

Merino’s injury is a setback for Arsenal, who had high hopes for the midfielder’s debut against Brighton on Saturday. The 28-year-old was expected to bolster Arsenal’s midfield options, and his absence leaves a gap in Arteta’s plans.

As the transfer deadline looms, Arsenal fans are hopeful for additional signings to strengthen the squad. While Raheem Sterling has been linked with the Gunners, Arteta avoided confirming any new deals but did not rule out further arrivals.

In other news, Arteta paid tribute to Aaron Ramsdale, who is set to join Southampton in a £25 million ($33m) move. “I want to say thank you for what he has done for the club, his team, and myself,” Arteta said. “He brought a lot of joy, his charisma, and energy. But things developed and it became difficult for him.”

Arsenal’s busy summer continues as they navigate through injury setbacks and transfer negotiations.
