For many years, fans of the FIFA video game franchise have been calling for the game to be cross-platform.

In the final edition of the game with EA Sports and FIFA in partnership, FIFA 23 will feature significant cross-platform playability for the first time.

The Sporting News looks at how you can play FIFA with friends and gamers using different systems.

How will FIFA 23's cross-platform play work?

Finally, FIFA 23 will feature cross-platform play across a number of game modes, but the functionality will be limited at launch.

Cross-platform play will be only available for gamers using FIFA 23 on the same generation of platform.

The platforms are grouped as First Generation: PS4 and Xbox One | Second Generation: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia and PC.

Depending on what version a gamer owns, they will able to play cross-platform with other users from the same generation.

For example, if a gamer owns the PS4 version, they will be able to play against Xbox One users and if a gamer owns a PS5 version, they can play against PC users.

At launch, gamers will not be able to use cross-platform play in Pro Clubs or any Co-Op modes.

Against Friends

FIFA 23 cross-platform play will allow gamers to play against friends in the following game modes:

  • Online Friendlies
  • FUT Play A Friend

Online matchmaking

FIFA 23 cross-platform play will allow gamers to play against friends in the following game modes:

  • FUT Online Friendlies
  • Online Seasons
  • FUT Rivals
  • FUT Champions
  • FUT Online Draft

Will Pro Clubs and Co-Op modes be included in FIFA 23's cross-platform features?

On FIFA 23's launch, there won't be capability to play Pro Clubs or Co-Op game modes between different platforms.

However, after a public backlash that the feature will be missing from Pro Clubs, EA Sports announced they will be 'focused' to bring this feature to the game eventually.

"I wanted to start off by speaking to an important topic in the community, cross-play," Richard Walz, Game Design Director for Pro Clubs and VOLTA Football at EA Sports, said.

"I share your desire to see cross-play in Pro Clubs, and understand the frustrations for not seeing it included in the launch of FIFA 23.

"While we're excited with the first steps to bring new cross-play features to FIFA 23, we also recognize what cross-play functionality could mean to the Pro Clubs mode with the potential for improving matchmaking and allowing friends from different platforms of the same generation to play together.

"With the scale of such an important feature, our goal is to bring you the best possible experiences. As we look at our cross-play future, we’re focused on matchmaking in Pro Clubs, VOLTA, and FUT Co-op, as well as cross-platform lobby invites and ultimately cross-platform Pro Clubs.

"We’re eager to provide updates in the future as the team continues to execute the plan for the future of cross-play. We love the passion of our community, and you help strengthen our resolve to push the mode forward and to bring quality changes for you to enjoy as players.

"We will provide an update regarding cross-play as soon as we can, we hear you."

At present, there appears to be no plans to bring cross-platform play to Co-Op modes.
