WEMBLEY, LONDON — Manchester City have won the 2024 Community Shield on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in regular time.

Jadon Sancho, who made his first appearance for United since leaving the club on rocky terms with manager Erik ten Hag earlier this year, missed a crucial penalty. Jonny Evans also missed, allowing City defender Manuel Akanji to step up and score the winner.

During the 90 minutes, Alejandro Garnacho scored from the bench to give United the lead before super sub Bernardo Silva equalised late and forced the game to a penalty shootout.

The Argentine forward became the youngest player to score in the Community Shield since Cesc Fabregas for Arsenal against Chelsea in 2005. He is also the youngest to do so for United since George Best in 1965.

Pep Guardiola's side put an end to their Community Shield losing streak, as they avoided a fourth defeat in this competition in a row.
