Canada's top performer was Shay Colley, who finished with 11 points and six assists, while Los Angeles Sparks' Kia Nurse chipped in 11 points. Bridget Carleton from the Minnesota Lynx added eight points and eight rebounds.
With the home crowd behind them, France went on a 22-0 run in the second quarter and Canada wasn't able to respond.
Canada will look for redemption when they face Australia, who was upset by Nigeria in their first game. WNBA player Alanna Smith led the Opals with 15 points and Sami Whitcomb added 13. This was Nigeria's first win at the Olympics since 2004.
