It has been more than a decade since India last won an ICC trophy. Their last triumph at the world stage was at the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 when India lifted the title under the able leadership of MS Dhoni.

Since then the South Asian giants have participated in multiple ICC competitions across all formats and have even come closer on several occasions to lift titles but they faltered at the last hurdle.

Most recently, under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, the Men in Blue reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India but they once again faltered in the final as Australia lifted their record sixth title.

Now with the T20 World Cup around the corner, Sharma and Co will take yet another attempt to finally end their trophy drought. The last time India won the T20 World Cup was in 2007 and their last triumph at the ODI World Cup came in 2011.

Virender Sehwag reveals what India needs to win ICC tournaments

One member of the Indian team who was part of both the triumphant squads in 2007 and 2011 was Virender Sehwag.

The legendary Indian opener was recently asked about India's constant failure at the highest level to which he cited the team's lack of fearlessness behind their inability to bag titles.

Speaking on a programme hosted by CNBC TV18, Sehwag said,

If I look back the last ODI World Cup final that we lost to Australia, nobody played fearless cricket between the 11th and the 40th over; we hit only one or two fours

I can give my example. When I was part of the team, from 2007-08 to the 2011 (ODI) World Cup, we used to treat every match as a knockout match, a World Cup semifinal; if we lost, we were out (of the tournament). So from 2007-08 to 2011, we won a lot of tournaments and prepared for the World Cup. So maybe the Indian team can do that and play every match as if it is a knockout match, that if we lose, we are out. So the mindset changes

He added,

I think that mindset is needed in that (Indian) dressing room when you go into a knockout match, you play fearlessly, with bravery, play with some risk. That, I think is lacking.

What next for Indian cricket team?

The Indian players are currently taking part in the IPL 2024. Once the domestic T20 competition is over, the 15-man Indian squad will travel to the US to take part at the 2024 T20 World Cup.
