India, who won the inaugural T20 World Cup will hope to reclaim the title after 17 years. The Men in Blue came close to grabbing the cup on multiple occasions in the past, having made it to the final in 2014 and then reaching the last four stage in 2016 and 2022.

The Men in Blue have also failed to win an ICC trophy in the last 11 years. They had the golden opportunity to bag the ODI World Cup held in India last year but they faltered in the final lap having lost to Australia in the end.

The IPL 2024 is currently underway and BCCI are looking to select the best possible squad for the upcoming World Cup and the selectors have their eyes on the premier domestic competition.

Will Virat Kohli open with Rohit Sharma at 2024 T20 World Cup?

There have been media reports which emerged in the last few months that suggested that BCCI could omit star batter Virat Kohli from the World Cup squad.

Now Dainik Jagran have reported that Kohli's future was discussed right after the ODI World Cup as captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid met BCCI's chief of the selection committee. There was a consensus among the selection committee that Kohli's place at the T20 World Cup was not guaranteed.

However, the veteran batter has displayed exceptional form in the ongoing IPL 2024 having led the Orange Cap race at the moment.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru star will likely open the innings at the World Cup with captain Sharma.

Will Yashasvi Jaiswal be selected for 2024 T20 World Cup?

The Jagran report further stated that with Kohli now likely to start as an opener in the World Cup, BCCI are planning to send only one standby opener.

The competition is between Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal and the Gujarat Titans skipper is likely to get the nod given his current form.

Jaiswal was in great shape during the Test series against England having scored the most number of runs in the series but has failed to live up to the expectations for Rajasthan Royals in the current IPL season.
