Matt Kuhnemann is firming as a shock selection choice for the second Test against India, with leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson flying home for the birth of his first child.

The 26-year-old will answer the call from Aussie selectors and fly over to India this week, putting his name in the mix for a debut in the Baggy Green later this week.

Left-arm spinner Kuhnemann has a solid first-class record to date, taking 32 wickets in 12 matches, as well as representing Australia in four ODIs.

The news was confirmed by Cricket Australia on Sunday afternoon while Kuhnemann was in the midst of a Sheffield Shield game for Queensland.

Kuhnemann could be in line for a shock call-up depending on the fitness of some other key players, with fellow left-arm orthodox spinner Ashton Agar reportedly struggling with confidence according to The Courier Mail

He told reporters after his Shield clash against Victoria that his call-up to the squad still hasn't sunk in.

"I got a phone call yesterday morning when we were walking out for the warm-up, to my surprise. I was pretty shocked and I was probably a little bit nowhere in the first session yesterday," he said.

"It was a pretty amazing feeling and it's pretty cool to tell the boys as well at the warm-ups.

"I’ve watched every day.. I've just been such a fan of these series, they're so good to watch. Todd Murphy was exceptional, and I watched how Jadeja bowled.

"I'm just really excited to be to get over there and be with the boys."

Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc are both pushing for a return from injury in Delhi, while there could be an unforced change after the controversial decision to drop Travis Head in Nagpur.

Australia lost the first Test by an innings and 132 runs, leaving more questions than answers for the remaining three games of the all-important series.

Head coach Andrew McDonald revealed that Kuhnemann is right in the mix to line up for the Aussies in the remainder of the series.

"He's a live chance to play in the next Test match," he said.

"If we play three spinners then we clearly want back-up here and available in the squad if that's the way we want to go. That's why we've got four spinners in the squad.

"The question for us was, is it too similar with two spinners operating in tandem spinning the ball? Did we use enough angles over and around at certain times?

"I thought Todd Murphy - we talk about all the negatives out of the game – but I thought that was a huge positive for us as a team.

"It gives us a different look at some potential structures for the next team."

The second Test will begin on Friday, February 17th.
