While Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins created history on Tuesday as they became the two most expensive buys not just in the IPL 2024 auction but in the history of the competition, their compatriots Steve Smith and Josh Hazlewood went unsold.

Meanwhile, South African batter Rilee Rossouw became the first cricketer to go unsold at the auction. Whereas, Adil Rashid was also ignored by all teams.

In the IPL 2024 auction, unsold players were afforded a second opportunity through the accelerated auction process. Players who did not find buyers in the initial round were reintroduced for bidding.

This unique approach allowed some players to secure spots in new teams as successful bidders came forward during the accelerated auction. However, despite the second chance, some players remained without buyers, facing the disappointment of being unsold in both the initial and accelerated auction rounds.

Steve Smith

Despite a base price of INR 2 Crore and consistent performances in the Big Bash League 2022, the star Australian batsman went unsold, even in the accelerated round. This is the second year in a row that he went unsold.

Philip Salt

The hard-hitting English wicketkeeper-batsman, despite his impressive performances against West Indies, scoring 109* and 119 in two consecutive T20Is, surprisingly found no buyers despite a base price of INR 1.50 Crore.

"I was a bit confused but it can happen. There's no bad cricketers on the list at the IPL. It's one of those thing," he said in the aftermath of the auction.

Josh Hazlewood

The sought-after Australian fast bowler, renowned for consistency across formats, remained unsold due to unavailability in March-April. Hazlewood is expecting his first child and plans to join after the first week of May.

Josh Inglis

Despite a stellar performance, scoring a century in the first T20I against India, the Australian wicketkeeper-batsman failed to attract buyers, staying unsold with a base price of INR 2 Crore.

Tabraiz Shamsi

The South African left-arm wrist spinner, excelling in T20Is with impressive statistics, including a recent Player of the Match award against India, surprisingly went unsold with a base price of INR 50 Lakh.

Jimmy Neesham

The New Zealand all-rounder entered the IPL 2024 auction with a base price of 2 crores. But he was left empty-handed after failing to impress in his previous stint with the Mumbai Indians.

Adil Rashid

The wrist-spinner is currently with the England national team playing against the West Indies. He was one of the most economical bowlers in the second T20I conceding just 35 runs in four overs, where no other bowler had an economy rate below 10 on a flat Trinidad pitch. Yet he went unsold.
