On June 1, the ninth edition of the Men's T20 World Cup is set to get underway in the West Indies and the USA. This year's tournament is an exciting one, as it is the biggest one so far with 20 participants, and the USA hosting a major ICC event for the first time ever.

As a result, there has been some doubt and apprehension over how the pitches in the States will behave. Most teams have played in the West Indies before, and if not there is at least a good amount of knowledge about them. The USA, however, is more of an unknown quantity.

Will New York pitch favour batters at the T20 World Cup?

There is even more uncertainty around one venue in particular; the Nassau County Stadium in New York. It is a pop-up stadium, constructed for the T20 World Cup and set to be taken down after the tournament is over.

The pitches for this venue are set to be 'dropped in', that is, transported from elsewhere and installed in the stadium, rather than being prepared from the existing turf. For New York, the pitches will be coming in from Adelaide, Australia.

On Friday, reports from Cricbuzz stated that India captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid got a chance to inspect the pitch, which will host their solitary warm-up match against Bangladesh as well as their group matches against Ireland, Pakistan and USA.

The pair reportedly came away satisfied with the nature of the wicket, feeling that it would aid batting, without much danger of up-and-down bounce or extremely high seam or turn.

What did Rohit Sharma say about the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium?

Speaking to the ICC ahead of the warmup match against Bangladesh at New York, Rohit Sharma said:

“We’re looking to understand the conditions more importantly as we haven’t been here before," the India captain said. “We will try and make the most of the conditions, get used to what it’s going to be like on June 5 when we play our first game."

Talking about the newly constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, where Team India will play their first three group stage matches, the Indian captain said:

“It looks beautiful. It’s quite an open ground. When we come here and play our first game, I just can’t wait to feel the atmosphere in the stadium. It’s a decent capacity as well. Hopefully, it’s gonna be a good one. People in New York will be very interested in coming and watching the World Cup, as it is happening for the first time here. I’m pretty sure all the fans across various teams are quite excited and looking forward to this tournament. And also, as players we can’t wait to get started."
