Australia have a tough history while touring in India, winning just one Test series in the sub-continent nation in the past two decades.

But during those tough times, there have been some standout individual performances by Australian players on Indian soil.

In the history of Australian cricket, only eight players have scored more than one Test century in India - and only three men have been able to do it more than twice.

Steve Smith will be a major factor in the upcoming series, while the likes of David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne will be looking for breakthrough performances in India.

Here's which Australians have scored the most Test centuries on Indian soil.

Which Australian has scored the most Test centuries in India?

Michael Clarke, Steve Smith and Neil Harvey have scored the equal-most Test centuries by an Australian in India, with three tons apiece.

Clarke was a fantastic player of spin and thrived in sub-continent conditions. The former skipper scored a century on debut in India all the way back in 2004, before adding to his tally in 2008 and 2013.

Smith has been a mainstay of the Test side for the past decade and is the only current player to score a century in India. The 33-year-old has enjoyed plenty of success against the rivals and was a standout last time the Aussies toured back in 2017, scoring all three of his centuries in the four-game series.

Ricky Ponting has scored the most Test centuries of any Australian player against India with eight, but just one of them came away from home.
