Oscar Piastri is a first-time Formula 1 race winner, taking out the Hungarian Grand Prix in controversial circumstances.

He snatched the lead on the first lap in Mogyorod and appeared on track for a maiden victory.

However, Piastri was overtaken by his McLaren teammate Lando Norris in the back half of the race, with the latter benefitting from an earlier pitstop.

Norris then grew his time advantage out front despite orders from the team to allow the Australian through for the win.

On the penultimate lap, though, he eventually let his teammate pass, much to the Briton's frustration over the radio.

Who won the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Piastri crossed the line first at the Hungaroring in a dominant McLaren display.

Regardless of any potential team tension, they will be pleased with the final result, recording their first one-two finish since Italy 2021.

The 23-year-old had previously won a sprint race, but Sunday afternoon's effort marked his first Grand Prix triumph.

It was a dramatic start at the Hungaroring as Norris, Piastri and Max Verstappen entered the first turn side-by-side.

Piastri snuck down the inside to grab the lead, with Verstappen going wide and taking P2, which he later had to hand back to Norris.

The Australian quickly built a handy three-second advantage over his McLaren teammate, as Norris' race engineer declared his "race is with Verstappen" over the radio.

Piastri's time advantage shrunk slightly as he went off track briefly during lap 34.

On lap 45, Norris pitted, which saw him sit a few seconds ahead of his teammate once Piastri changed his tyres later.

As Norris' gap at the front grew, his engineer pleaded with him to hand the lead back to Piastri.

There was always a chance he would disobey team orders and secure his second F1 career win, but he ultimately followed the instructions, letting his second-year teammate pass down the straight with two laps remaining.

While the events between the McLaren duo were the centre of attention, Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen and Charles Leclerc had an engaging battle for the last podium spot.

Hamilton's early undercut paid dividends, pushing him into P3. He was challenged all race by Verstappen, with their battle ultimately coming to a head on lap 63, as the Dutchman locked up and made contact with the seven-time world champion.

Verstappen ended up in the gravel but recovered to finish in P5.

Hamilton — who is enjoying a strong recent run in his last season with Mercedes — came home to finish on the podium ahead of out-of-form Ferrari driver Leclerc.

It was a relatively quiet affair in the back half of the grid.

Sergio Perez did manage to recover from P16, finishing well within the points at P7.
