The 2022/23 Premier League title race could go down to the wire as Manchester City and Arsenal push for the trophy.

The Citizens are one point ahead of the Gunners, but also have a game in hand on the north London side.

Pep Guardiola is on course to lead his side to a historic treble as they compete for the Champions League and FA Cup too, while Mikel Arteta is trying to bring Arsenal their first league title since 2004.

With the gap between the champions and challenger being so close, it is possible they could finish on the same number of points and require a tiebreaker.

What are the Premier League tiebreakers?

If Man City and Arsenal were to finish on the same amount of points on May 28, there are four tiebreakers that can come into play in the Premier League.

The first two tiebreakers are goal difference and goals scored, neither of which are uncommon scenarios at the end of a league season.

If the teams are still level after those two stipulations, the winner will be decided by the team who has collected the most points in the head-to-head matches. This would be Man City this year as they beat Arsenal in both league fixtures.

The final potential tiebreaker will be most away goals in the head-to-head fixtures, but the chances of this happening is very low.

Has the Premier League ever been won by a tiebreaker?

One of the most famous Premier League season was decided by a tiebreaker as Man City won the 2011/12 title on goal difference.

Roberto Mancini's side had a superior goal difference to Sir Alex Ferguson's Man United heading into the final game of the season, knowing a win would probably be enough to secure the league title.

A last-gasp winner from Sergio Aguero gave City a 3-2 victory over QPR at the Etihad Stadium on the final day. This meant both Manchester clubs finished on the same number of points, but the Citizens had a goal difference of +64 to the Red Devils' +56.

Arsenal are 14 goals behind Man City on goal difference, giving the reigning champions the advantage at the moment.

Team Matches Played Wins Draws Losses Goals For Goals Against Goal Difference Points
Man City 34 26 4 4 89 31 58 82
Arsenal 35 25 6 4 83 39 44 81

Has the Premier League ever used all the tiebreakers?

The Premier League has never been decided by anything more than goal difference, and it seems very unlikely that this will be the case this season too.

However, the league title has been decided by a single point on six different occasions. The most recent occurrence came last season when Man City edged Liverpool to domestic glory.

Premier League seasons decided by one point:

  • 2021/22: 1st - Man City (93 pts), 2nd - Liverpool (92 pts)

  • 2018/19: 1st - Man City (98 pts), 2nd - Liverpool (97 pts)

  • 2009/10: 1st - Chelsea (86 pts), 2nd - Man United (85 pts)

  • 1998/99: 1st - Man United (79 pts), 2nd - Arsenal (78 pts)

  • 1997/98: 1st - Arsenal (78 pts), 2nd - Man United (77 pts)

  • 1994/95: 1st - Blackburn (89 pts), 2nd - Man United (88 pts)
