With their golden era long gone, Spain find themselves in a transitional phase under boss Luis de la Fuente, who was appointed in 2022 to replace Luis Enrique after Spain were knocked out of the World Cup by Morocco in the Round of 16.

They responded strongly, winning their first international trophy in 11 years in the shape of the Nations League, defeating Croatia on penalties in the final.

Euro 2024 represents another opportunity for De la Fuente and his side to prove their mettle, with some talented individuals ready to do the business and guide La Roja to a record-breaking fourth Euros title. Now they are in the semifinal of the competition, Spain will come up against the real heavyweights — France.

When is Spain's Euro 2024 semifinal vs. France?

Spain's next game at Euro 2024 is their semifinal match against France on Tuesday, July 9.

Spain began their campaign with a clash against Croatia at Olympiastadion in Berlin. What had been billed as a potentially close contest ended in a one-sided 3-0 win for La Roja, with Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz, and Dani Carvajal all scoring in the first half.

In their second match at Schalke's Veltins-Arena, La Roja defeated Italy 1-0 thanks to an own goal from Riccardo Calafiori. The game was more one-sided than the scoreline suggested and Gianluigi Donnarumma made several good saves. The result secured Spain's place as winners of Group B.

Spain rounded off their group matches with a routine 1-0 win over Albania, and then took apart Georgia 4-1 in the Round of 16, despite falling behind to a shock early goal from the tournament debutants.

They needed extra-time to see off hosts Germany, with Mikel Merino's late goal seeing them earn a 2-1 win to reach the semifinals.

Spain's European Championship record

Spain were European champions as hosts in 1964, but it took them 44 years to win their second major trophy, Euro 2008, under Luis Aragones.

That, of course, proved to be the first silverware in a era of sheer dominance by La Roja, whose "tiki-taka" style of play brought them two more huge honors in the form of the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, as they became the first country ever to defend the European Championship crown.

Last time around, Spain came close to reaching a fourth Euros final, but were defeated by eventual winners Italy in the semifinals.
