Newcastle have secured their place in the Champions League for the first time since the 2002/03 season.

The Magpies got the one point they needed to make certain of a top-four finish, earning a 0-0 draw with relegation-threatened Leicester City on May 22.

Their last European adventure ended a decade ago, meaning a return to Europe's elite club competition will not be an easy one for Eddie Howe's side.

The Sporting News looks at the teams Newcastle could face in the Champions League group stage.

Which pot will Newcastle be in for the Champions League draw?

Newcastle are likely to be drawn into a difficult group in the Champions League.

The Magpies have not participated in a European competition since 2013, meaning their current UEFA coefficient is zero. This would leave them in pot four of the draw, with Celtic being the only other team confirmed to be in that pot at the moment.

A club's coefficient in calculated by their record over the previous five season in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League. Man City currently have the highest coefficient in the continent, followed by Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

Who can Newcastle draw in the Champions League 2023/24?

Pot one of the Champions League draw will contain the current holders of the title, the winners of the Europa League, along with the champions of the top six European leagues based on coefficients.

Manchester City, Barcelona, and Napoli have all confirmed their places in pot one as champions of their respective leagues. Newcastle will not face City in the group stage as two teams from the same nation cannot meet in the competition until the knockout rounds.

Real Madrid have secured their spot in pot two, and are likely to be joined by Atletico Madrid, Juventus, and potentially Bayern Munich if they finish second in the Bundesliga.

Pot three could see the likes of Lazio from Serie A and Shakhtar, meaning Newcastle could be left with a big job on their hands.
