For the first time since 2011, Canelo Alvarez fights in front of family and friends. The undisputed super-middleweight champion returns to action following surgery, defending this belts against John Ryder on May 6.
The fight takes place in Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The DAZN-produced event will be Canelo's first fight in Mexico since he beat Kermit Cintron via TKO inside Plaza de Toros. At the time, he was the light-middleweight champion. Turning pro in 2005, Canelo has a 33-0-1 record in Mexico.
“I feel really happy to be coming back in May because following my surgery, I was unsure of when I'd be coming back,” said Canelo. “Returning to the ring and coming back to fight in Jalisco, where I'm from, makes me especially happy. And in John Ryder, I'm facing a very competitive fighter.”

In less than eleven months, Canelo became the undisputed super-middleweight champion, beating Caleb Plant in November 2021 to secure his status. He failed to capture light-heavyweight gold a second time in his career, losing to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022. That was his first loss since 2013 against Floyd Mayweather, ending a 16-fight unbeaten streak. Canelo's last fight was a unanimous decision win over Gennadiy Golovkin in September, ending the trilogy 2-0-1 in favor of him.
He has since been recovering from left wrist surgery.
Ryder turned pro in 2010. Winning local belts to start his career, Ryder won the interim WBA super-middleweight title against Bilal Akkawy in May 2019. Callum Smith beat him that year to retain the WBA and The Ring belts. Since then, Ryder has won four in a row, including victories over Daniel Jacobs and Zach Parker. He beat Parker for the interim WBO super-middleweight title.
"The Gorilla" will be the second British fighter to face Canelo in Mexico since the latter beat Ryan Rhodes via TKO in June 2011 inside Arena VFG in Guadalajara.
“There’s no denying that Canelo is one of the greats, and I’ve got a lot of respect for what he’s achieved in the sport, but I fully believe this is my time to fulfill my dream of becoming a World champion,” said Ryder. “I’m not going over there for a holiday. For me, this is purely business, and my full focus is on going into his backyard in Guadalajara on May 6 and bringing those belts back with me to the U.K. I want to thank the team, Tony and Charlie Sims, and Matchroom Boxing for making this happen.”
