The 73rd Ashes concluded on July 31, with two of cricket's biggest powerhouses having squared off once again across five massive Test matches during the English summer.

Australia ultimately retained the urn, after a successful tour of England in 2019 and their impressive series victory on home soil in 2021/22.

Since its inception in 1882, The Ashes has been seen as the pinnacle of Test cricket, and one team has the slight advantage in the history books.

The Sporting News takes a look back at the full history of The Ashes.

Who has won the most Ashes series?

Of the 73 series played to date, Australia have won 34 and England have won 32, with seven drawn series, including the 2023 one after a thrilling finale at The Oval

The past 11 series between the two sides has been rather even, with England winning five and Australia winning four, along with two draw series.

There has now been two drawn series in the past 50 years, with the 2019 edition in England finishing with two wins apiece and allowing the Aussies to retain the urn.

That score was repeated in the 2023 showpiece, as Stuart Broad's heroics in the final Test at The Oval saw England battle back for 2-2.

Who holds the Ashes now?

Australia are the current holders of The Ashes after retaining the urn in the 2023 Ashes series. They retained the trophy they won when beating England 4-0 in Australia in 2021/22, including the first Ashes Test to be played in Tasmania.

Their 2-1 lead after four games in the 2023 series was enough to see the Aussies retain the urn, and even though the rain forced a draw in the Fourth Test at Old Trafford and they lost the Fifth Test at The Oval by 49 runs, they kept hold of the trophy.

When did England last hold The Ashes?

England have not held the Ashes since 2015.

Australia won back the Ashes in Australia during the 2017-18 series (4-0), retained the Ashes in the 2019 drawn series (2-2) and then held onto it once more during the 2021-22 series in Australia (4-0).
