David Warner is set to join the Fox Cricket commentary team following the announcement of a mammoth $1.5 billion broadcast rights deal.

After months of speculation and negotiations, Cricket Australia announced a seven-year extension with Foxtel and Seven on Tuesday morning in a massive boost for the sport.

Warner has hinted at a potential retirement from Test cricket within the next 12 months, and the legendary opener is clearly starting to look at post-career options.

Following the announcement of the new deal, Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany revealed that the 36-year-old would join an all-star cast on the 24/7 cricket channel.

“David Warner has been one of our most exciting cricketers since he burst onto the international scene in 2009, and we are thrilled that he will be joining our world-class Fox Cricket team,” he said.

“A fiercely loyal and tough competitor on-field, he is an exceptional analyst of the game and will bring unique insights and perspective to our Fox Sports coverage through Fox Cricket across Foxtel and Kayo Sports.”

The network already boasts the likes of Mark Waugh, Mike Hussey, Adam Gilchrist and Allan Border and have become the clear leader in cricket coverage.

Fox Sports executive director Steve Crawley believes that Warner will only add to the excitement of Fox Cricket's coverage in the years to come.

“We will never replace Shane Warne or Andrew Symonds on the Fox Cricket commentary team...but if you were given just one shot at picking a recruit from all of world cricket, you’d pick David Warner," he said.

“When he came out to bat you could double your audience. He made cricket exciting...he’s the same in the twilight of his career as he was in the beginning - a swashbuckling, fearless individual.

“I’ve been around sports broadcasting a long time and believe David Warner is made for commentary the same way he was made to open the batting.”

Warner will line up for the Aussies in the final Test of the summer in Sydney, before joining up the Thunder in the Big Bash competition
