The mega auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to take place later this year ahead of IPL 2025 season, as the franchises embrace a major revamp of their squads ahead of the next season.

The last mega auction took place in 2022, and with the three-season cycle complete, the majority of the players will be back on the auction pool, acting as a fresh start for all the franchises.

BCCI had invited suggestions from several IPL owners for proposed changes ahead of their meeting later this month at the BCCI office at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

According to a Times of India report, some of the proposed changes include salary increments, extending mega auction cycle to five years instead of three and for an increase of Right to Match (RTM) options to eight.

What is the likely player purse for teams at the IPL 2025 mega auction?

According to the report, if the suggestions of some of the franchises were to be considered, the salary of a player bought at a certain price at the auction will increment in value multiple times, if he performs well in the upcoming seasons.

For example, a player who was brought at a price of around 40 lakhs at the mega auction could see his value rise to crores if he has a good performance in the IPL 2025 season.

"The current system doesn't allow for a player's salary to be increased by a franchise once he's bought in the IPL auction. Like most jobs, there's no provision of increment. Suppose he's bought for Rs 30 lakh and has an outstanding IPL, the franchise should have the option of offering him, say a Rs 3 crore fresh contract for the next year, rather than lose him to some other team. This will prevent poaching by other teams," an official told TOI.

"The IPL needs to allow franchises to renegotiate the salary of a high-performing player. It will allow a team the option to retain its best players of the previous season without the worry that they would ask to be released or traded by other teams. The players would be happy about the handsome increment, while the franchises will be pleased to avoid poaching," the official added.

Increase in player purse for IPL 2025

One other suggestion put forward by some franchise owners to IPL CEO Hemang Amin and some BCCI officials, was the increase of player purses for

"The salary cap for each team is set to witness a massive increase-from Rs 90 crores to around Rs 130-140 crores," the TOI report said

"It has been pending for a while. The salary cap is likely to be increased from Rs 90 crores to Rs 130-140 crores. As per the media rights agreement in 2002, IPL 2025 & 26 will see 84 matches, while IPL 2027 will include 94 matches. It means more matches, with little gaps between them. The players are bound to ask for and expect more money," the source added.

The final decision will only be made after the meeting between the BCCI officials and franchise owners at the end of this month.
