While Australia have gotten the better of India in International Cricket Council (ICC) finals recently, they have failed to get hold of the Border-Gavaskar trophy back from the Men in Blue, for over a decade.

The Men in Yellow had beaten the Indian team in both the World Test Championship (WTC) and ODI World Cup 2023 finals. However, Australian spin bowler, Nathan Lyon has declared that they are still hungry to win the BGT trophy back from India.

The Border-Gavaskar trophy series is set to take place once again starting in November, later this year, and which is scheduled to end in the first week of January 2025.

The five Tests against India are not only important in this context alone, but for the race for Australia to qualify for the WTC final as defending champions at Lord's in June 2025.

What did Nathan Lyon say about Australia's motivation ahead of Border-Gavaskar series against India?

Nathan Lyon in an interview to ESPN Cricinfo had revealed the Australian team's motivations ahead of the Border-Gavaskar series against India later this year.

Interestingly, several cricketers in the champion Australian team including captain Pat Cummins are yet to get their hands on the BGT trophy as they have never won a Test series against India, in the last decade.

"It's been ten years of unfinished business, it's been a long time, and I know we're extremely hungry to turn things around especially here at home," Lyon said.

"Don't get me wrong, India is an absolute superstar side and extremely challenging but I'm extremely hungry to turn things around and make sure we get that trophy back."

"Feel like we are a different team to a couple of years ago, we are on a journey of becoming a great Australian cricket team. We're definitely not there but we are along that journey and have been playing some decent cricket," he added.

India had also shocked the Australian team in the last BGT series in 2021 as they made a comeback in the series after trailing 0-1, which included a humiliation of 36-run all-out.

However, Lyon is extra prepared this time around, after his participation in the County Championship back in England, where he took intel from fellow spinner Tom Hartley, who picked up 22 wickets in the 5-match series against India, in 2023.

Additionally, the off-spinner revealed that he has himself been keeping a track of the Indian team's recent games in the red-ball format, and in particular, was impressed by the young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who dominated England bowlers, at the top of the order.

"I haven't come across him [Jaiswal] yet, but that will be a massive challenge for all us bowlers. The way he played against England, I watched that quite closely and thought that was quite amazing. I had some really good chats with Tom Hartley about different ways he went about it to different guys which I found quite interesting."

"I love talking about cricket, so if I can talk to someone who has played Test cricket I might be able to pick up something I'm not aware of. There's so much knowledge floating around this game that we can always tap into," he concluded.
