Afghanistan's dream run at the T20 World Cup 2024 quickly turned nightmarish on Wednesday evening as they were bowled out for 56 by South Africa in the first semifinal of T20 World Cup 2024. It was also the first time at the T20 world event that a team was bowled out for less than 100 in a semifinal.

T20 World Cup 2024, hosted by USA and West Indies, was the most inclusive ever as it featured 20 teams. Afghanistan had defied expectations to get through a tough group and then defeated Australia in Super 8 to qualify for the semifinal of a cricket World Cup for the very first time. But South Africa's pedigree came to the fore on the day.
