Steve Smith will don the magenta strip once again this summer, with the superstar batsman officially linking up with the Sydney Sixers ahead of the Big Bash season.

The 34-year-old is currently part of Australia's squad in the T20 series against India, while also playing an important role in the side's triumph in the recent ODI World Cup.

Smith is set to return home next week in time for the franchise's opening game against the Melbourne Renegades on December 8th, as well as their second fixture against the Hobart Hurricanes three days later.

The right-hander could also be in action for the Sixers following the Test series against Pakistan and West Indies, with a potential showdown against David Warner in the 'Sydney Smash' on January 12th.

Steve Smith commits to Sydney Sixers for Big Bash season

In a statement released on Monday morning, Smith expressed his excitement regarding a return for BBL|13 after his dominant performances at the back-end of last season.

“It’s great to be back in the Sixers shirt,” he said.

“I’ve got some really fond memories playing for the Sixers.

"Obviously, I am an original, part of the first squad and really enjoyed my time last year for the five or six games and the finals that I played so I am keen to get out there again.

“Sixers fans, just get around the team. We have a wonderful team, wonderful culture and we are looking forward to another great season in the Big Bash."

After finishing up his international duties in the 2022/23 home summer, Smith lined up in five games for the Sixers, scoring 346 runs at an incredible average of 86.50, helping them towards a berth in the final.

Sixers captain Moises Henriques welcomed his NSW teammate back into the fold and believes he will add vital class and experience to the squad.

“Steve is a Sixer through and through," he said.

"Any opportunity for him to be a part of this group, we will always jump at that chance.

"It goes without saying that he’s one of the best players the game has ever seen. He’s obviously someone you want playing in your side, but he’s also a guy we love having around.

“He is one of the most entertaining players in the world to watch, so for our fans to get that opportunity this season is a no-brainer for us.”

The final T20 between Australia and India is scheduled for December 4th, allowing Smith a few days of rest before pulling on the pink kit.
