Steve Smith will once again captain Australia in the fourth and final Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy series against India.

In the absence of Pat Cummins, who left the tour last month, the former skipper led the visitors to a landmark victory on Indian soil in the third match.

"Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the fourth Test match against India in Ahmedabad to remain in Australia with his family," a CA spokesperson said.

"Steve Smith will captain Australia in the final match of the series."

Smith captained the national side for four years before the infamous ball-tampering scandal in South Africa brought his reign to a crushing end in 2018.

However, he has since been reintegrated into the set-up and has served as Cummins’ deputy ever since the bowler was named skipper in 2021.

This week will mark the fourth time since that time Smith has deputised as a fill-in captain.

"My time [as captain] is done,” Smith insisted following Australia’s nine-wicket win in the third Test.

“It's Pat's team now. I've obviously been able to stand in this week in tough circumstances with Patty. Our thoughts are still with him back home.

"But India is a part of the world I love captaining ... it's probably my favourite place in the world to captain.”

Cummins left the tour to return to Sydney and be with his family with his mother placed in palliative care.

No decision has yet been announced on whether he will re-join his teammates for the three-game ODI series that follows the final Test this week.

Although CA did reveal that Nathan Ellis will replace Jhye Richardson in the ODI squad after the latter picked up a hamstring injury.
