Steve Smith has continued his red-hot summer form by bludgeoning his way to a historic century for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.

The Australian Test star became the first man to notch a ton for the Sixers in BBL history, before his impressive innings came to a comical end when he was run out right after reaching triple figures.

Smith survived an early scare when the ball trickled onto his stumps after a miscued shot, but the 33-year-old didn't let that bother him as he went about attacking the Adelaide Strikers' bowling line-up.

After almost being dismissed for just two runs, Smith took full advantage of his lucky reprieve to help eventually steer his team to an imposing total of 5/203.

Smith's 101-run contribution smashed off just 56 balls as he helped himself to five boundaries and seven sixes.

The opener's wicket falling just one ball after Kurtis Patterson was snagged in the field by Travis Head with the duo putting on just shy of 150 for the second wicket.

Smith's century comes off the back of an impressive cameo against the Perth Scorchers last week when he made 36 off 27 balls during his side's crucial win.
