The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) is likely to announce the retention rules for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction, which is scheduled to take place towards the end of this year.
Last month in July, the BCCI had arranged a meeting between Board of IPL franchise owners, to get feedback and suggestions regarding the auction and tournament rules.
While there were many teams who had objected the idea of conducting the mega auction, it is expected that the auction will go on as scheduled.
Additionally, there were also many disagreements and debates among the owners regarding several rules including the uncapped player rule, retentions, and more. SRH owner Kavya Maran had stated some of her demands ahead of the mega auction for the IPL 2025 season.

When will the BCCI announce IPL 2025 mega auction retention rules?
According to Cricbuzz reports, the BCCI is likely to announce the updated retention rules for the IPL 2025 mega auction, later this month (August 2024).
"There is a growing perception that the BCCI will announce the retention rules by the end of this month. As previously reported by Cricbuzz, teams are expected to be allowed around six retentions, including the RTM option," the report said.
"Although some franchises had called for the discontinuation of the Big Auction, the BCCI is not planning to eliminate it, for the time being at least," the Cricbuzz report added.

How can CSK retain MS Dhoni through the uncapped player rule?
According to the uncapped player rule that was scrapped back in 2021, if a player has not featured in international cricket for five or more years, they can be considered to be uncapped.
Since Dhoni last played for India in the 2019 ODI World Cup, he could be considered as an uncapped player in the 2025 season, if this rule is reinstated.
The return of the rule will help Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as Dhoni will be considered as uncapped, to save a retention spot.
Each team is likely to get around 4-6 player retentions. If CSK are able to retain Dhoni as an uncapped player, they will be able to retain their other major players using the main retention spots, and at the same time, save money.
