Alick Athanaze scored a well-crafted 92 runs in the fourth innings and while he missed out on his maiden Test century, his inning played the crucial role as West Indies earned a draw against South Africa in the first Test of the two-match series at Queen's Park Oval, Trinadad on Sunday, August 11.
The West Indies were chasing a target of 298 after the Proteas declared at 173 for three, in the second innings. Athanaze along with Jason Holder (31*) put up a partnership of 65 runs for the fifth wicket as they took the team from the 127 for four just after tea on final day, finishing at 201 for 5, at the end of the Test match.

Alick Athanaze made his professional debut at the age of 18 in January 2017, for the West Indies Under-19s in the 2016–17 Regional Super50 on 25 January 2017.
Later that year in November, he was announced as a part of the West Indies U19 World Cup squad, in which he emerged as the rising star, as he finished as the top run scorer in the tournament with 418 runs.
After strong performances in the 2022/23 West Indies Championship four Day Cup, where he became the top-run scorer with 647 runs in 10 matches, he was selected to the West Indies Test squad against South Africa, on February 2023.

Three months later, in May 2023, he made his ODI debut in the series against UAE, in the third ODI, where he scored 65 runs and equalled the record for the fastest half-century on ODI debut.
Later that year, he scored 66 runs in the first ODI against England as West Indies successfully chased down a target of 326 runs, to win the game by 4 wickets.
While he had a quiet start of 2024 with the bat, he played a crucial innings of 92 runs in the Test match against South Africa in August 2024, helping his team earn a draw, from what looked like a losing position.
