Bangladesh has an opportunity to boost their chances with a win over Pakistan in the ongoing second Test match. Currently in fifth place, Bangladesh could rise to fourth if they secure a victory in Rawalpindi.

How are WTC points calculated?

The WTC operates on a points system where teams earn points based on their performance in Test matches. The points distribution is as follows:

  • Win: 12 points
  • Draw: 4 points

Teams are ranked based on their percentage of points earned (Points Percentage or PCT), which is calculated as:

PCT= (Points Won / Points Contested) × 100

This system means that teams with fewer matches can still compete effectively if they achieve a high win rate. The top two teams at the end of the cycle will qualify for the final, scheduled for June 2025 at Lord's.

How Bangladesh can surpass England on WTC table?

For Bangladesh to climb ahead of England in the WTC standings, a victory over Pakistan is crucial. Here's how such a win would influence their position:

  • Points Impact: Winning the match would award Bangladesh 12 points, raising their total to 33 points across six matches.

  • PCT Adjustment: With a total of 72 points possible from these six matches, Bangladesh’s new Percentage of Points Won (PCT) would be calculated as follows:

    New PCT = (33 / 72) × 100 = 45.83

The win would push them past England. Given that England's current PCT is 45, Bangladesh’s improved PCT of 45.83 would see them leapfrog England into the 4th position in the WTC table.
