India's ten-year wait for an International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy continued as they suffered a disappointing defeat to Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final on Sunday.
While Australia dominated India for much of the match, the game wasn't bereft of controversy. The biggest talking point of the final came when India batsman Shubman Gill was dismissed. He was caught out by Cameron Green off Scott Boland and third umpire Richard Kettleborough deemed it a legitimate wicket on second viewing.

However, stills taken from the replays hinted that the ball may have touched the grass even if Green's fingers were under it. Based on these images, some spectators felt Gill was unlucky to be given out. The batsman himself posted the pictures on his social media.

As a result, Gill was sanctioned by the ICC in response to his social media activity commenting on the decision made by Kettleborough.
Why was Shubman Gill fined?
The ICC did not take too kindly to Gill's post, and the Indian batsman was fined 15% of his match-day earnings in the WTC Final for public contempt of the third umpire's decision with regards to his controversial dismissal.
"India’s Shubman Gill will also face a sanction for appearing to criticise the decision to give him out on the fourth day of the Test, breaching article 2.7 which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match. The young opener has been fined 15 percent of his match fee. In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Gill’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period," an ICC statement read.

Additionally, India have to forego 100% of their fee from the WTC Final after being fined by the ICC due to maintaining a slow over rate throughout the match. Australia too have been sanctioned for the same, however, they will only have to pay 80% of their match fee.
