The 2024 Canadian Grand Prix sees F1 arrive at one of the most well-known tracks on the Formula One calendar, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.
Before raceday on Sunday, though, there's the small matter of qualifying to get out of the way, which will decide the final grid placings for the 20 drivers to start tomorrow's race.
Three-time defending world champion Max Verstappen's qualifying record had been perfect this season up until Monaco last time out, starting atop the grid for the first seven races of the season in a row before a Q3 to forget saw him line up in sixth in the principality — the same position in which he finished the race itself on the narrow Monte Carlo street circuit.
F1's current qualifying system operates in a knockout format. Following the first session, Q1, the slowest five drivers are eliminated and aloted places 16-20 on the final grid. Q2 sees the same happen with positions 11-15 decided and then eliminated, and the top half of the starting lineup is determined by the times achieved by the 10 remaining drivers in Q3.
While Verstappen, Leclerc and several of this season's other big-hitters battle it out for the top placings across the three qualifying sessions, Alpine's Esteban Ocon already knows he cannot start on pole. He is facing a five-place grid penalty for his wild first-lap collision with teammate Pierre Gasly in Monaco last time out. Ocon came off worse, retiring from the track, but the penalty means that even if he defies the odds to finish first after Q3, he'd still be pushed back to sixth place on the grid come raceday.
