Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix 2023 race results: Max Verstappen takes win in dominant Red Bull showing

Max Verstappen rocked the field like a Miami hurricane.

Verstappen started the 2023 Miami Grand Prix in ninth place, but stormed all the way up the field and to No. 1 overall, taking the win on Sunday:

"Miami Max" has now taken wins at both Miami Grand Prix races after a win in 2022 saw him hold off Charles Leclerc in the closing stages of the race. This year's race was fairly incident-free: Outside of a start-of-race dustup, there were no safety cars and no real points of adversity for the reigning driver's champion.

It was a Red Bull podium lockout for the top two steps; Sergio Perez took the second step on the podium after a late battle with Verstappen, while Fernando Alonso finished out the race in third for a familiar podium combination.

Mercedes continued to put in strides to challenge for second best this year, though they seem a bit distanced from Red Bull early on. George Russell finished fourth, while Lewis Hamilton finished sixth.

5:02 p.m. FINISH: Max Verstappen takes the checkered flag in Miami, followed by Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso on the podium.

4:54 p.m.: Five laps left: Verstappen, Perez, Alonso, Russell, Sainz. Not the most eventful race. No safety cars, no crashes, no real drama.

4:47 p.m.: Max and Sergio with a very brief battle, and Verstappen retakes the lead on Lap 48. Respectful battle between the two Red Bull teammates.

4:44 p.m.: Not the best pit stop for Verstappen, and Sergio Perez retakes the lead. He'll have to retake the lead with 12 laps left. A little teammate battle never hurt anyone.

4:32 p.m.: At lap 38/57, Verstappen, Perez and Alonso are the top three and could be slated for a podium. That said, Verstappen has yet to pit, so the top of the grid could look a bit different if he doesn't extend his lead at the top a bit longer. Lewis Hamilton pits and comes back out in 13th.

4:26 p.m.: Lewis Hamilton gets the pass order from team strategy — George Russell has the pace and is challenging Saiz for fifth.

4:22 p.m.: A U.S. debut to forget for Logan Sargeant — an early pit stop, and he's in 20th and 19 seconds behind Oscar Piastri.

4:17 p.m.: Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, Esteban Ocon, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz are the current 1-through-5 entering Lap 30. The race has certainly settled in after a helter-skelter beginning and several overtakes. Hamilton, Russell, Hulkenberg, Tsunoda, Gasly round out the top 10.

4:09 p.m.: George Russell doesn't seem happy with the front wing, letting out a pair of expletives on team radio.

4:07 p.m.: In the middle of the pack, Albon and Stroll are putting in a good fight for ninth. No drivers have retired yet.

4:03 p.m.: Ferrari tries the undercut, with Carlos Sainz heading into the pit.

3:56 p.m.: Max Max Max Super Max … heads into third place after passing Sainz, and then passes Fernando Alonso for second place. A clean race for Verstappen.

3:49 p.m.: And Max Verstappen makes his move and takes fourth from George Russell. Russell seems confident in the team's plan, though, despite getting passed.

3:45 p.m.: Verstappen inches closer to George Russell. He's a half second behind the Mercedes driver and just set the fastest lap early on.

3:43 p.m.: Lewis Hamilton seems to have an issue with the front of his car — the car is pulling him sideways on the straights. Team says there are no issues with the car at the moment.

3:39 p.m.: Max Verstappen is now in sixth after starting ninth and he is on the hunt for Russell in front of him. World champ is in top form early on.

3:38 p.m.: Logan Sargeant enters the pit for a new front wing, it's unclear where the contact or damage may have come from.

3:37 p.m.: Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz, Pierre Gasly and George Russell are your 1-through-5 entering Lap 3. DRS will be enabled, so we may see some overtakes.

3:34 p.m.: Lights out and away we go. Perez holds off Fernando Alonso, and the pack is starting to lengthen. Lando Norris goes off, but looks like his car is OK. Alonso chasing, no real drama at the start, heading into Turn 11.

3:30 p.m.: Formation lap is underway. Good mix of medium, soft and hard tires, but most seem to be on the mediums to start the day.

3:18 p.m.: Ladies Love Cool J — LL Cool James, for the uninitiated — gives the big race introductions for all 20 drivers today, and we are roughly 12 minutes from lights out in Miami.
