The 2024 MotoGP season is — unfortunately for motorcycle racing fans — slamming the breaks on for four weeks at the height of summer, giving the 27 riders their biggest stretch of downtime in the current campaign with seven races of the scheduled 20 having been completed so far.

Jorge Martin goes into the break on top of the World Championship standings, sat 18 points ahead of second-placed Francesco Bagnaia, the two-time defending world champion. Bagnaia may have won four races to Martin's two so far this season, but the Spaniard's performances in sprints and recording five podium places from seven available means he's edging it at the summit.

After Bagnaia made it two race wins on the bounce at both the Catalunya and Italian Grands Prix in recent weeks, the break comes at an unfortunate time for the Italian world title holder. The action gets back underway in the Netherlands at the end of June, and season 2024 will culminate with a fourth Spain-based race in Valencia this November.

How long is the MotoGP summer break?

While a summer break occurs every year in MotoGP, this year's 28-day halt on the schedule comes thanks to some races being cancelled and others switching place in the calendar.

The first-ever Kazakhstan Grand Prix was eventually slated to be held midway through the four-week break, but with question marks still hanging over the event making its debut, it has been pushed back to Sunday, September 22, filling in for the cancelled Indian Grand Prix.

When does the MotoGP return in 2024?

The next scheduled MotoGP race in 2024 is set to take place over the weekend of June 28-30 with the Dutch Grand Prix at Assen, better known as the Mogul Tourist Trophy.

That's a four-week break between the meetings in Italy and the Netherlands, giving the 27 drivers a chance to recharge, refuel, and refocus their action plan ahead of the second half of the season — with 26 of them playing catch-up behind Martin at the top.

The summer break comes midway through a long stretch of European races to mark the summer period of the season. We've already seen two in Spain, one each in France and Italy, and the German Grand Prix will follow the Dutch TT in the first weekend of July.
