The NFL is looking to patch things up in Week 1, in a good way.

Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson and other electrifying rookies are set to take an NFL field for the first time in their careers this weekend. When they lace up the cleats, tie up the shoulder pads and throw on their duds for the first time, it may look a bit different from their teammates.

That's because the NFL has introduced the "PREM1ERE" jersey patches for rookies making their debuts this season. Several rookies who are on 53-man rosters in Week 1 will get the patch, while other rookies making their debut throughout the 2023 season will get the same treatment.

The NFL is no stranger to patches: From the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award patch to captaincy patches, there's always a healthy serving of embroideries on the fronts of NFL jerseys. The rookie patch, though, is a new addition that may have taken some inspiration from MLB's introduction of a similar concept earlier in 2023.

There's a big difference, though. While those MLB rookie debut patches are removed, authenticated and then placed on 1-of-1 baseball cards, the NFL jerseys that have the patch will be taken and gifted to rookies to commemorate and honor their first game.

"An NFL rookie's first game marks an unforgettable occasion in his football experience and we are excited to preserve this moment and honor this milestone," said Troy Vincent, EVP of football operations.

So, when you see a special patch on your team's top draft selection this weekend, know that it's a special jersey — and a special moment — for him.
