The FA Cup continues to hold a place in the hearts of football fans as the oldest club cup competition in the world stretching all the way back to 1872.

However, as the Premier League and UEFA competitions have continued to grow in prestige and influence, the competition has been tweaked in recent seasons, to ensure its ongoing survival.

The battle to keep the FA Cup at the forefront of domestic football has frequently meant a tussle between tradition and future planning with the Premier League playing a key role.

Extra games, including replay matches have come under scrutiny, with the Premier League and the FA working on joint solutions to try and keep both sides of the debate happy.

Are there replays in the FA Cup 2023/24?

The FA confirmed at the start of the season there would be mandatory replays for games that ended in draws up to and including the Fourth Round in 2023/24.

However, from the Fifth Round onwards, matches that are tied after 90 minutes will go to a 30-minute period of extra time. If the scores are still level, a penalty shootout will decide the contest.

The picture will change again for the 2024/25 campaign with a fresh FA update confirming all replays, from the First Round onwards, will be scrapped.

The changes are part of a new six-year agreement between the FA and the Premier League with the top-flight winter break also removed from the schedule for 2024/25.

Is there extra time in the FA Cup semifinals?

The incoming FA Cup semifinals for 2023/24 will hold the potential for extra time, if scores are level at the end of regulation time, with penalties on the horizon if there is no change in the score after 30 minutes of extra time.
