Euro 2024 is underway for a month-long extravaganza of football.
The 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship is headed for Germany, with the tournament set to run from June 14-July 14.
The hosts are one of 24 countries from across Europe taking part, and with the tournament being played in the same months as CONMEBOL's Copa America 2024, there is plenty to keep football fans entertained over the coming weeks.
The tournament gets underway with the group stage, which will see 6 groups of four teams pitted against each other. Here, we breakdown the first phase of the competition, below.

Euro 2024 tournament format
The UEFA European Championship begins with the group stage on June 14 and will progress for the subsequent month, with the knockout stage starting on June 29 and opening with the Round of 16.
The final will take place in Berlin on July 14 to crown the winner and close out the competition.

Twenty-four nations have booked their spot at Euro 2024, with those teams being decided by a lengthy qualification process. As tournament hosts, Germany were the only team to qualify automatically.
Having secured their place, the teams were all drawn into six groups for the initial phase of the finals.
The top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will qualify for the Round of 16.
