Liverpool embarrassed Manchester United at Old Trafford as they put three past Erik ten Hag's side without reply.
Luis Diaz bagged a first-half brace that saw Casemiro hooked at halftime after his worst performance in a United shirt to date, and that's saying something.
The midfielder's poor pass in his own half allowed Liverpool to break quickly, Mohamed Salah hanging up a cross to the back post for Diaz to head in. Seven minutes later, Diaz barged Casemiro off the ball and the visitors again attacked quickly, Salah this time prodding a low pass to Diaz who finished stylishly first time.
As if to underline their fragility in midfield, Kobbie Mainoo was guilty of losing the ball in his own half early in the second period in the build-up to Salah's strike. As was the case against Brighton & Hove Albion last week, United owed all the goals they conceded to their own mistakes.
Salah's assists for both of Diaz's goals were impressive, as was his finish as he added Liverpool's third in the second half with a neat strike into the bottom corner. That goal saw a large number of United fans head for the exit and it was Salah's 10th in nine appearances at Old Trafford for Liverpool in all competitions, bettered by no other Red throughout history.
Man United vs. Liverpool final score
FT | Goal scorers | |
Man Utd | 0 | |
Liverpool | 3 | Diaz 35', 42', Salah 56' |
Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester
Referee: Anthony Taylor
Starting lineups:
Man United XI (4-2-3-1, right to left): Onana (GK) — Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot — Casemiro, Mainoo — Fernandes, Garnacho, Rashford — Zirkzee.
Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1, right to left): Alisson (GK) — Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson — Mac Allister, Gravenberch — Salah, Szoboszlai, Luis Diaz — Diogo Jota.
For Arne Slot, he also made history as he became the first Liverpool manager to beat Man United in his first game in charge of this fixture since Bob Paisley in 1975.
The Old Trafford crowd were further frustrated when Ten Hag brought off Alejandro Garnacho instead of Marcus Rashford. The Englishman had yet another quiet game and the fans made their voices heard with the loudest boos of the afternoon.
The best chances for United all fell to Joshua Zirkzee, who tested Alisson on multiple occasions, but the Brazilian got the better of him.
Fortunately for the home side, the international break is now upon us and United will have two weeks to get over this damaging result before they take a trip to Southampton on September 14.
Slot will have been desperate to build on this momentum but he'll have to wait until a home clash against Nottingham Forest, where he can win his fourth in a row to begin his Liverpool career.

Casemiro is brought off for Collyer at the break.
Halftime: Man United 0-2 Liverpool
Well, what a perfect start to Arne Slot's career in this fixture. If he is to win, he'll be the first in his debut game vs. Man United since Bob Paisley won 3-1 in November 1975.
44th min: Toby Collyer has been sent to warm up. Surely he replaces Casemiro at halftime.
42nd min: GOAL! Diaz doubles his tally and Liverpool's lead with a tidy finish into the bottom corner after Salah picks him out well. Casemiro is yet again caught in possession, which led to the counter.
39th min: Mazraoui's strike is well saved by Alisson as the Liverpool keeper is tested for the first time this afternoon.
35th min: GOAL! Casemiro is caught yet again as his pass is woeful and Liverpool break quickly down the right before Diaz heads home. Salah's cross was pinpoint from the left and Diaz had only teammate Szoboszlai to contest for the header.
30th min: De Ligt stops another attack from Liverpool as he this time dispossesses Jota in the box.
25th min: After Casemiro loses the ball Liverpool again break through Gravenberch but his through ball is broken up. United have got to find a solution to stopping the Dutchman, he's been running the show this afternoon.
20th min: Mainoo is down injured after a hefty collision with Gravenberch.
17th min: Garnacho breaks down the right but cuts the ball back to nobody.
14th min: It does feel as though Slot instructed Gravenberch to just pick the ball up in midfield and run straight down the middle as there's another huge gap in United's system.
11th min: A break in play as Mac Allister is down receiving treatment.
8th min: RULED OFFSIDE! The Old Trafford crowd goes wild. Alexander-Arnold looks a silly man now after his celebration. Salah got a touch on the ball from Diaz and he was in an offside position.
7th min: GOAL! Liverpool lead as Alexander-Arnold's strike just about goes over the line! It was a cracking ball across from Luis Diaz.
4th min: Van Dijk beats Zirkzee to the ball on the halfway line and plays Jota in behind but he snatches at the ball and drags an effort wide.
3rd min: It's a bright start from United as Rashford is causing Alexander-Arnold problems down the left flank already.
Kickoff: First half

Man United vs. Liverpool lineups, team news, starting 11
The news that Mason Mount is once more facing several weeks out of action with a muscle injury was a big blow to United this week. With Scott McTominay now at Napoli, they suddenly look light on midfield options, particularly as Manuel Ugarte is not yet available following his deadline-day transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.
Joshua Zirkzee may therefore get his first start, perhaps alongside Bruno Fernandes in the 4-2-2-2 set-up Ten Hag has favoured in 2024. Rasmus Hojlund is still out and Jadon Sancho has gone to Chelsea, so Marcus Rashford will likely keep his place despite his poor form, with Alejandro Garnacho perhaps getting the nod ahead of Amad Diallo.
Man United predicted XI (4-2-2-2, right to left): Onana (GK) — Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot — Casemiro, Mainoo — Garnacho, Rashford — Fernandes, Zirkzee
Injured: Rasmus Hojlund, Victor Lindelof, Mason Mount, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro
Suspended: None
New Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa could make his debut for the club at Old Trafford, although it's likely he would be a substitute at best, having only just completed his transfer from Juventus.
Curtis Jones faces a battle to be fit after missing the win over Brentford, but Slot has an otherwise fully fit squad for this huge early test of his Anfield tenure.
Liverpool predicted XI (4-2-3-1, right to left): Alisson (GK) — Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson — Gravenberch, Mac Allister — Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz — Jota
Injured: Curtis Jones (doubt)
Suspended: None
