Wimbledon 2022 results: Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios reach quarterfinals

Nick Kyrgios booked his spot in a first Wimbledon quarterfinal since 2014 with a five sets win over American Brandon Nakashima in the opening Centre Court match on Monday.

The livewire Aussie had to battle a shoulder injury throughout but saved his best tennis until a crucial third set tie-breaker and a decisive fifth set, eventually triumphing over the talented 20-year-old 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-2.

After the match, Kyrgios insisted it was far from his best performance and he'd need a glass of wine to recover this evening, as he'll now begin preparations to face unseeded Chile star Cristian Garín, who came from two sets down to beat Australian Alex de Minaur, for a place in the semis.

The second men's match on Centre Court saw Rafael Nadal reach his eighth Wimbledon quarterfinal with a 6-4 6-2 7-6 (8-6) victory over Botic van de Zandschulp to keep his quest for a 23rd Grand Slam alive.

Having played four-setters in his opening two matches, the Spaniard is now finding his best form and as the only top-10 seed in his half of the draw he remains on course for the final.

He'll face American Taylor Fritz in the next round who he has already lost to once this year back in April in the final of the Mexican Open.

The Sporting News was on hand to bring you all the game-by-game updates and highlights below of Kyrgios and Nadal's wins - check out how the action unfolded below.

Nadal's serve is on point but still a few too many forehand errors to his liking at present. Van de Zandschulp shows his opponent exactly how to hit a forehand winner on the move down the line to get to 30-30. At 40-30, Nadal does unleash one right from the top drawer.

Nadal hits a neat backhand return to put some early pressure on, 15-30. The next point is even better, the Spaniard's forced to run all the way from the back of the court to make a drop shot, he does, but van de Zandschulp returns the volley before Nadal lobs him. Van de Zandschulp hits back-to-back forehands long to set up break point but then hits a winner to save it. The Dutchman eventually holds and he's up and running.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-2 Brandon Nakashima - KYRGIOS WINS FIFTH SET AND THE MATCH

A weak Kyrgios forehand coupled with a strong Nakashima forehand winner sees the Aussie fall to 0-30. A textbook whipped forehand from Kyrgios and then Nakshima firing into the net has him level. He drills one down the middle which ricochets off Nakashima's racket to bring up match point and he takes it with a volley at the net. A brilliant performance given his injury struggles and he marches on to the quarter-finals!

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-6 5-2 *Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios hammers a forehand that kisses the base line, 15-15 and then wins the next. Nakashima responds with two big winners of his own with Kyrgios having no chance of reaching them, 40-30. The American drills another to wrong-foot his opponent and will at least make Kyrgios hold serve to win.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-6 5-1 Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios gets to 30-15 by opening up his body and drilling a forehand into empty space. Nakashima shakes his head as he then hits wide, 40-15. An ace seals the game and Kyrgios can smell the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-6 4-1 *Brandon Nakashima

Nakashima can't handle Kyrgios' power at the net and falls behind. Kyrgios plays a sliced backhand which draws Nakashima in but the spin takes it away from him, 15-30. He brings up two break points but the first goes begging. The second also falls away as Kyrgios returns a big serve long. A Nakashima error gifts him another opportunity and he takes it this time with a stunning winner. Kyrgios turns round and celebrates wildly in the direction of his box.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-6 3-1 Brandon Nakashima

"Let's go!" shouts Kyrgios as he takes the first point. He suddenly looks fired up now. A couple of big serves gets him to 40-15 and he again seals the game with an ace out wide.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-6 2-1 *Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios attempts to play a volley though his legs, not out of choice but due to quick reactions, but gets his feet in a muddle and falls to 30-0. Kyrgios wastes another challenge against Nakashima's forehand winner but gets back to 40-30. Kyrgios soon has break point as the American hits a forehand long. He saves it with an ace. He gets another opportunity from a brilliant return backhand and finally gets the break courtesy of Nakshima finding the net from close range.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-6 1-1 Brandon Nakashima

One into the net and one well wide... Kyrgios is in trouble, 0-30. He digs himself out of a hole with back-to-back aces and then has to go at full stretch to return a backhand volley at the net. He gets the hold.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-6 0-1 *Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios needs to regain his focus, he's taken his eye off the ball. At 40-0 he does hit an awkward forehand winner right to the back of the court though. Nakashima holds at the next point.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-6 Brandon Nakashima - NAKASHIMA WINS FOURTH SET

Nakashima hits a delightful backhand drop shot to open things. Kyrgios goes for underarms serves but he's soon at 0-40 down. He claws back two points in a hurry but then smashes a forehand wide and long. That was even a bit too quick of pace for Kyrgios it seems as he tried to unsettle his opponent only for it to cost him.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-5 *Brandon Nakashima

Nakashima makes some mistakes of his own to allow Kyrgios in, 15-30. A backhand winner followed by a rare ace puts Nakashima back in control but he can't get a straightforward forehand over the net, deuce. A big serve and a Kyrgios error later and he gets a big hold.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-4 Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios is impatient during a long rally on the third point and overhits a forehand, 15-30. He then hits a forehand wide, challenges but is unsuccessful, and Nakashima has two break points. Nakashima gets the break as Kyrgios puts another wide. Poor decision-making with shot choices from start to finish in that game.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-3 *Brandon Nakashima

Nakashima hits his ninth double fault of the match before Kyrgios hits an easy forehand wide, 40-15. A brilliant return with pace catches Nakashima on the back foot at the next but he makes sure his final serve is on point to hold.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 3-2 Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios deceives everyone on Centre Court, including Nakashima, with a backhanded drop shot to go 30-15 up. Nakashima then returns a serve long and Kyrgios wraps up with an ace.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 2-2 *Brandon Nakashima

Nakashima shows brilliant agility to reach a volley after Kyrgios' attempts at a cross-court forehand winner. The American holds with ease.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 2-1 Brandon Nakashima

There's less touching of his shoulder but Kyrgios is still anything but animated on court even when he misses easy forehands like the one here to  go to 30-30. He follows up with back-to-back aces.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 1-1 *Brandon Nakashima

Patient play from Kyrgios leaves him in with a chance to break as a forehand sent to the back right gets him to 30-30. Nakashima ensures he doesn't get to break point though with a fierce forehand of his own at the next point. He double faults, deuce. Nakashima goes on to hold, cushioning Kyrgios' shot with his racket at the net.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (7-2) 1-0 Brandon Nakashima

If Kyrgios is still carrying some shoulder pain then rest assured he's going to want to rattle through this fourth set. Kyrgios switches things up with some net play and it pays off as he wins a lively point with a backhand volley, 40-15. He shrugs his shoulders as he seals it with an ace. Hard to tell if that's him trying to shake off the injury or just acting like it's business as usual for him and that's just what does best.

Nakashima double faults but then Kyrgios hits a forehand beyond the base line. Ace again, this one 129mph.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 (2-1) Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios loses the first with a backhand wide before the American fires a backhand down the line at the end of a long rally, long. Kyrgios aces.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 6-6 Brandon Nakashima

Whatever discomfort he's in it's not impacting the serve. Kyrgios adds another two aces to his tally as he holds to love. Into the tie-break we go.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 5-6 *Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios is having to pick his winners as he's lacking some movement around the court and he does so brilliantly to get to 30-30, a forehand into the corner deceiving Nakashima. The American goes on to hold though, a lovely volley at the net closing out the game.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 5-5 Brandon Nakashima

The crowd seem unsure of how to motivate Kyrgios, they're not used to seeing him so quiet, but understand he's carrying an injury and playing with some discomfort. It's suiting Nakashima perfectly though, he drills a forehand winner to get to 15-30. Kyrgios retains his focus though, sealing his hold with an overhead smash at the net.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 4-5 *Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios challenges a backhand effort of his own that goes out, more than anything just to give him a breather it seems. Another backhand finds the net and he holds his shoulder again, 40-0. Nakashima makes errors at the next two points but Kyrgios then gets a forehand drop shot wrong and Nakashima gets the hold.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 4-4 Brandon Nakashima

"It's not going away - at all," Kyrgios says, presumably about the pain in his shoulder. That doesn't stop him getting to 40-0 mind. He sends a forehand wide to allow Nakashima back in and then holds with an ace.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 3-4 *Brandon Nakashima

Nakashima doesn't let up, obviously, and two big serves gets him to 30-0. Kyrgios can't return the next two points either.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 3-3 Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios is back on serve and wins the opening two points with a forehand winner and an ace down the middle. Kyrgios comes to the net on the third point but Nakashima reads it and sends a backhand down the line, 30-15. Kyrgios goes on to hold but we'll have to see how well his shoulder pain holds up against the serve.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 2-3 *Brandon Nakashima

Nakashima double faults after winning the opener. Kyrgios attempts a sliced forehand but it's nowhere near making it over, 30-15. He then hits back-to-back backhands into the net to concede the game.

Kyrgios has called the physio on to presumably get some sort of treatment to his shoulder pain that continues to bother him and has called for a medical timeout. Those two backhands into the net on the last two shots lacked any sort of conviction and he needs to address the pain now.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 2-2 Brandon Nakashima

A hold to love for the Aussie as well, hitting his 18th ace of the match in the process.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 1-2 *Brandon Nakashima

Nakashima gets his wish with a few rallies and he comes out on top in all of them. He saves the best til last with a deft drop shot to hold to love.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 1-1 Brandon Nakashima

It's clear Nakashima wants to entertain long rallies to get some points but when Kyrgios is serving like this there's not much the can do. An ace and a classic serve and volley combo get him his first hold of the third set.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 0-1 *Brandon Nakashima

Nakashima races to 40-0, an ace sealing the third point. A lovely forehand deceives Kyrgios to hold.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 6-4 Brandon Nakashima - KYRGIOS WINS SECOND SET

Kyrgios takes the opener as he gets to the net quickly to volley home a  poor return by Nakashima. He double faults at the next but then hits a delightful backhand drop shot, 30-15. Nakashima is quicker off his line at the next point and this time he makes Kyrgios' sliced effort, 30-30. Kyrgios resorts to another ace to set up set point and the next serve is just as big. One-set all.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 5-4 *Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios has Nakashima doing plenty of running in the opening points but it''s 30-15 before Nakashima drills an ace out wide. Kyrgios then hits a backhand into the net and will now serve for the second set.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 5-3 Brandon Nakashima

Another ace down the middle gets the ball rolling. Nakashima is patient in the next few and Kyrgios can't return a fierce backhand from his opponent, 30-30. Kyrgios responds by hitting a ridiculous 137mph first serve. The next ace is just a disappointing 132mph ace.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 4-3 *Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios returns the opening two forehands long and is just starting to wiggle his right shoulder a little more often. Nakashima serves up an ace but then hits into the net on the following point, 40-15. Another forehand goes long from the American but the next, right from the back of the court, clips the net and goes beyond Kyrgios' reach.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 4-2 Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios is successful on his challenge of his serve called out at 30-0 and then drills an ace at the next point. He holds to love. New balls please.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 3-2 *Brandon Nakashima

Tweener alert! Absolutely no need to play one at 15-15 during a long rally but Kyrgios does so anyway... and wins the point a few shots later. Nakashima doesn't let it bother him though and goes on to hold.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 3-1 Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios has been very quiet by his standards so far. He does seem to be holding his shoulder every now and then in some discomfort but he has just rattled off a 123mph serve to hold so things can't be impacting his game too much...

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 2-1 *Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios shows patience in a long rally to force Nakashima into making the mistake, 15-30. Nakashima plays a fierce backhand to the back corner which Kyrgios can't return on his backhand, 30-30. The American double faults to set up break point but Kyrgios can't capitalise. He gets another and this time Nakashima does him a favour, hitting a forehand well beyond the baseline. Kyrgios gets his first break of the match.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-6 1-1 Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios apologies as a backhand of his clips the top of the net and falls over, 30-0. Nakashima gets back level and then Kyrgios gets his positioning wrong to mess up a forehand. He saves break point and then hits an ace on his way to getting an important hold.

Nick Kyrgios 4-6 0-1 *Brandon Nakashima

Errors from Kyrgios get Nakashima to 30-0 before the Aussie hammers a return forehand from the serve across court. He drills another forehand to the right side this time, 30-30. Nick Kyrgios 4-5 *Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios decides to guess which way Nakashima serves on the third point but guesses wrongly and it's the easiest of aces, 40-0. He double faults the next before Kyrgios returns wide.

*Nick Kyrgios 4-4 Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios is just as calm and focused though and unrelenting in his powerful serves, the final one looks to almost have broken strings in Nakashima's racket at 115mph.

Nick Kyrgios 3-4 *Brandon Nakashima

Cue the longest rally of the match for the opener that ends with Nakashima's forehand going just wide. Then he hits an ace and another serve Kyrgios can't return. Nakashima looks really comfortable out there at the moment.

*Nick Kyrgios 3-3 Brandon Nakashima

This match might not the best in terms of rallying so far because the serving is ridiculously good right now. Kyrgios chalks up another ace en route to holding serve.

Nick Kyrgios 2-3 *Brandon Nakashima

The American is delivering some pretty big serves of his own though, without the need for underarms, and gets to 40-0 as Kyrgios can't return all three. Nakashima holds with a forehand down the middle that Kyrgios couldn't get to having ran to make a forehand on the far right.

Kyrgios gets to 40-0 with an ace on the third point and then attempts an underarm serve but it's a let. A little warning for Nakashima to always expect the unexpected when facing his serves. Kyrgios goes on to hold.

Nick Kyrgios 1-2 *Brandon Nakashima

Forehand winners each to start the third game, 15-15. Kyrgios then attempts a backhand down the line but it's just wide and the same happens again with his forehand return on the next point, 40-15. Kyrgios claws it back to deuce but the American delivers two big serves on the final two points.

*Nick Kyrgios 1-1 Brandon Nakashima

Kyrgios drills an ace on his opening serve and Nakashima fails to return the next right down the middle. The ball sits up nicely for the Australian on the fourth point and he hammers home a forehand winner before Nakashima puts one wide.

Nick Kyrgios 0-1 *Brandon Nakashima

Nakashima gets to 30-0 with Kyrgios failing to return both opening serves. The third he returns over the net but wide. Nakashima holds to love as Kyrgios blasts a forehand long.

1:31pm: So the reception wasn't actually much louder for the players entering the court just now. Centre Court isn't quite full just yet. Maybe they're all getting the popcorn ahead of a Box Office afternoon of tennis to come. Players are warming up now and then we'll be underway!

1.27pm: The crowd looks up for this one already... and that's just judging by the reception they've given the line judges!

1.15pm: A reminder of today's order of play on Centre Court:

Brandon Nakashima (USA) v Nick Kyrgios (Aus)
Paula Badosa (Spa) [4] v Simona Halep (Rom) [16]
Botic van de Zandschulp (Ned) [21] v Rafael Nadal (Spa) [2]

1pm: Nick Kyrgios has so far played matches on No.3 Court, No.2 Court and most recently No.1 Court - where he won an epic four-setter against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Asked earlier this week, if he's bothered about not playing on the biggest courts he replied: "No, I don't mind what court I play on. I mean, these courts are beautiful. It's probably one of the best tennis centers in the world. I don't mind where I play."

Kyrgios is certainly a player who thrives off the crowd's support... and playing in front of as many as 15,000 spectators on Centre Court he'll want to keep them on side.

12.30pm: Hello, and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of Nick Kyrgios' fourth-round clash against American Brandon Nakashima. The lively Aussie is bidding to reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time since 2014 and if his latest match against Stefanos Tsitsipas was anything to go by, we're in for a real treat this afternoon!

Players will be taking to the court in just under an hour's time.
