The Second Test between Australia and England in this year's Ashes has been rife with controversial moments, with multiple talking points for supporters throughout the match.

Another bizarre incident took place during the last day of the Second Test involving England's Jonny Bairstow and Australia's Alex Carey. England's chase seemed to be on track with Ben Stokes and Bairstow looking to consolidate the innings.

And it seemed like just another delivery when Bairstow ducked Green's short delivery before leaving the crease in the 52nd over.

However, just as he had ventured out of the crease, Carey had launched a throw back at the stumps and it hit the target. And the Aussie players immediately celebrated, while the English batsman looked bewildered by what just took place. The umpire signalled to the third umpire, who after reviewing the incident deemed Bairstow out, which was met with boos from the home supporters.

Why was Jonny Bairstow given out?

As per the International Cricket Council (ICC) rule 20.1.12, "The ball shall be considered dead when it is clear to the bowler's end umpire that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket have ceased to regard it as in play."

Carey had thrown the ball before Bairstow had left the crease or signalled to the fielders and umpires that he would be leaving the crease. Thus, the Australian bowler was well within his rights to run out the English batsman, as the ball had not yet been deemed a dead ball by any of the players on the field, nor the umpires.
